Pipe Plugs into Aluminum Intake - Material ?
« on: September 16, 2019, 05:16:10 PM »
I recall putting an aluminum fitting into an aluminum manifold and it seized up tight - like forever!  So, maybe I did something wrong or what is the best/better pipe plug material for aluminum intake manifolds?  I have brass and steel and am afraid of aluminum now.

I tried Google for this and - well - some say aluminum with anti-seize is fine and some say brass because it is close in galvanic properties.  Or stainless steel (harder to find).

Teflon tape...about three wraps. Be careful when tightening the fitting because the teflon is "slick" and the fitting can be over tightened very easily.

Mcmaster Carr has hex socket pipe plugs in 316 SS
(not that expensive for a high quality part)

Stainless, and use an antiseize for aluminum.
Dissimilar metal issues on the boat all the time...

I use brass or aluminum - and always with anti-seize or teflon, PTFE paste, teflon tape.  Steel spark plug into aluminum heads - always anti-seize.
