1976 F-350 Rear Brakes Swapped Over To A 1965 F-250
« on: August 12, 2019, 11:43:20 AM »
I am sliding a 76 Dana 70 F-350 axle in my 65 F-250 while I rebuild the original Dana 60. The 76 wheel spacing and perches are good to go to the 65. If the 65 backing plates and brakes won't bolt up to the 76 axle I will use the 76 rear brakes. I have not looked up the specs yet but the rear brakes are wider and the cylinder is likely 1/16" to 1/4" larger in diameter.

QUESTION: If I use the larger brakes on the existing 65 system will there be a big enough difference to lock the rears under semi aggressive stops?

What is the load sensing rear brake valve called that came on some cargo vehicles? I could take advantage of the oversized rear brakes and give them more juice when loaded heavy.

You can just buy an adjustable brake valve from most brake manufacturers.   Keep closing it til it won't slide the tires.

An adjustable one would be nice, but getting it set correctly will take a lot of trail/error.  All depends on how much weight it takes to move the springs to make it read a difference.

Larry you gave me a heck of an idea. About $350 ago I bought everything needed to convert the single pot 65 to a factory dual pot 67 drum/drum set up. Pre-bent brake lines were half of it and the NOS distribution block and master cylinder were the rest. I think I will shelve most of it and hand plumb the dual pot to some new 65 lines. This valve would be an interesting and useful accessory to fill the manual choke spot on the dash. A brass or chrome knob would look good.

We are going to ignore the home made plastic nut and pretend I ordered the correct Bronco fit for my 65 truck switches. The truck received emergency flashers when it was rewired. The red light that the factory flasher equipped trucks came with is not hooked up. That was going to be my red light for the 67 proportioning valve switch.

Interesting thought.  Never thought to put it in the dash, but doable.  Much easier to adjust "on the fly" while testing it?

I put a similar valve on the wagon for the rear, but never adjust it since I've never slid the tires.  Though I've never "panic" stopped it before.  It's on the frame, below the master cylinder.

That is what I was thinking. I have only had two I can think of. Both in Ft. Worth area and both towing pickups. So far I have been able to find a hole or shoulder. More rear would help force the front down.
