Rear main seal material
« on: August 08, 2019, 08:57:50 AM »
Replacing the rear main seal in my 3.8L mustang.  I have a choice of rubber, viton, or teflon.  Anyone prefer one of these over the other?  Is the preference for ease of install, longevity, etc?  Thanks

BTW, it's a once piece seal that rides the crank flange.

Any will work.

Viton seals are nice.

Teflon seals go on dry.  They burnish themselves into the crankshaft to seal.

From dealing in the oil and gas industry, the Viton should hold up better to the oil.

Viton. Lasts longer than rubber, more durable than teflon in a lip seal configuration.

Thanks to all for the info.  I'll try a viton.

I read somewhere about Teflon needing to be installed dry on a dry shaft.  I might try that someday on a seal that doesn't take so much effort to inspect.
