Ford 9'' interchangeability
« on: July 19, 2019, 08:42:13 AM »
Looking to upgrade 1960 galaxie 9". I want to use a 4 pinion small bearing 28 spline posi with 4.11 gear in a C7AW-E case. Some ebay sellers are specifying fitment as '64-'86. What gives?
   Mike.

Don‘t know about the eBay sellers but if you have not been to Kevin’s 9 inch Ford site you might benefit from taking a look there. It is not the bottom line gospel on 9” but is very helpful. Sorry I cannot supply a link at this time.

4 spider units usually have the "big" bearing hub on them . To put them in a 3.062 case you use a 603049/603011 bearing set ( #37 in wheel bearing sets). To put one in a "small bearing" case you use the "slim line" bearing set 102949 and 102910 I don't remember the "set" number. IF the posi has the small bearing hub , you will be limited to a small bearing case and the 503049/503011 bearing combination. The actual cases all fit the same housing from 57-78 (or 79 truck).

mostly good information but a "nodular case " was NOT created by adding MAGNESIUM to the cast iron . Rather it was MANGANESE and some nickle.  Dennis K could tell the true "formula". He's already looked into it.
