1963 Galaxie generator to alternator swap
« on: July 01, 2019, 02:10:01 PM »
Done several searches before posting this subject but found nothing on a swap. Changing over to a basic 60 amp alternator on my 63 Galaxie.  I have several wiring schematics for my car and found a download for a swap with a internal regulator but none for a swap like I want to do. Can someone give me a download for a  63-64 ford swap?  Also do I need a different regulator for this?

You can make this so much easier by doing a 3G upgrade.  Takes the regulator out of the equation.  There are plenty of sites out there with abundant instructions on the upgrade.

Don't know what  3G is and besides I have brackets mounted on my 428 for this 60 amp alternator and alternator mounted to engine, fits like a glove, just needing the correct schematic to show me the difference btwn the two applications. I have the 3WD-218 and 219 for the 63 ford V8 but don't know which wires I can use on my 63 for converting to an alt. And not sure about the regulator.

This is a good start, BUT, all of the wires that are currently connected to my 3 terminal regulator that are running to the harness going to the dash, which terminals will they go to on the new 4 terminal regulator ?

Which is why you should consider a newer model (the 3G).  They fit in the same brackets.  Wiring is simple - big wire through a fuse to the battery side of the solenoid, yellow sense wire to the same place, your existing green/red to the same green/red that's been used from the 60s to the mid 90s on Ford cars.  You end up with a much better overall system.  Those old 60 amp units barely put out enough to handle high beams and an AC blower.  I had a stock "75A" 2G on the 1993 F-350.  I would not run the lights and AC at night without struggling.  Not to mention the 2G harness likes to catch fire.  I put a junk yard 3G large case 100A on it ($45) and all the power problems went away.

THIS is a "3G" - the 4 holes in the case front ID this as a "small case":  https://www.dbelectrical.com/products/alternator-ford-truck-93-95-f1pu-10346-da-f3ht-10300-gb.html?mrkgcl=1145&mrkgadid=3209329520&product_id=AFD0079&adpos=1o3&creative=194905621868&device=c&matchtype=&network=g&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpPHoBRC3ARIsALfx-_L2LyCP7u3SbvhmhPnYR5OsB86EzM7loFGV4-KpyrsY4aj7X8DAlAcaAiMpEALw_wcB

Sorry to be such a bother Chris, but, if the old external regulator is no longer needed, Then will all the wiring that is hooked to the 3 terminals all be merged into 1 and that lead wire to go back to the battery side of the solenoid? All of my wiring is mostly all original and in very good condition out to the regulator and also under the dash. Also wondering about the plug-in on the 3G alt, what goes there? And I'm guessing the serpentine pulley can be replaced with my single groove pulley?
Again sorry for my ignorance.  Bud

The external regulator harness will be out of the equation with a internally regulated alternator. The F-250 got a 3G swap the same time it got a complete rewire. The kit I used was for a GM one wire but I stuck with a Ford and used an exciter wire ran through the factory ALTERNATOR bulb. I have not seen anyone else mention there alternator contacting the block so this may be a larger casting. A washer behind the spacer cured it. Not sure what pulley it needed, I used what was on the shelf till the belt alignment was right. A basic 60 amp will be fine for a basic car with a hot ignition. I did mine for hooking up to something with an auxiliary battery. If I were to get real techey I could add an air conditioner.

EDIT: All the time I spent soldering factory Ford connectors onto the GM based harness kit I still left that jumper crimped!
