Wanted crankshaft key for the timing gear
« on: May 02, 2019, 03:59:42 PM »
This is the one that drives the crank gear on the timing set. 3/16ths x 1.25- 1.375. I could use a couple. Summit has them but I believe there too long and they gat bad reviews on them. Garry

Garry, you can buy 12" lengths of hardened key stock from McMaster Carr, pretty reasonable and stronger than a stock key.  Cut them to length with a cutoff wheel.

The crankshaft timing keyway on a stock FE is a shallow woodruff deal - sort of a half moon.  Its available from Pioneer and is readily orderable at a normal parts store - probably less than from Summit.  I keep them in stock but the mailing would cost more than the part.....

You need to throw the included fuel pump eccentric away

Key you need is Pioneer 839012
..and a file to detail it a bit so it actually fits....

Thanks Barry, I went next door to the IH tractor dealer and he found some that were the same size but a bit taller. I worked one down on the sides to fit with out beating it to death and then filed it down to the right height so the gear slides on. Goal today is to install the pistons and rods and maybe do the timing wheel check. I got to pack it back in the plastic bag to keep out the crap before Monday.
