rear end blues
« on: March 24, 2019, 06:14:17 PM »
well i believe my rear in my comet is about shot.it has the 28 spline axles 4.11 gears. question is what are my options for a rebuild or replacement.can i upgrade to 31 spline and still use my housing,or would i have to change it all to go to 31 spline.or would i be better off buying some better 28 spline axles and swapping the hogs head

Yes you can keep your housing and run 31 spline axles and gear, make sure your housing is not bent.

i noticed a noise, a clanking noise so i jacked up the rearend and when you spin a wheel back and forth it has alot of play and makes a loud clanking noise.and if you keep spinning a wheel it sounds bad.it has a catch in the same spot every time the wheel spins a complete turn.my stump came out of a 63 galaxie 4.11 gear,390 3 2s,4 speed car and has many, many miles on it.im sure its SHOT.

OK, why do you need 31 spline axles, or "better" 28's? Take it apart and see what you got going on. Might be able to just freshen what's there and get another billion miles out of it. 28's aren't all that weak.

Years ago, I went from a 28 spline 9 inch with an Auburn cone-type limited slip and 3.75 gears, to a 31 spline 4.11 gear center with a Nascar takeout Detroit Locker.   I love it.  I bought a used Nascar centersection off of Ebay and got some new Moser axles.

I was leery of using a Detroit Locker because you hear how bad they are to live with, but I have not experienced anything that would make me feel that way.  It just flat out works.

I think you need to have the same axle bearing size?  3.062"?   Then there are 3.25" and another bigger size?  I have the small bearing size.

Once you go Detroit Locker, you never go back!  :)  I just bought another 31 spline Nascar Detroit Locker center section for $650 off of Ebay.  Usually, they are a bit more.

I can't remember how much the axles cost.  I payed more for American made.  I hope Moser's still are, but who knows these days.
