68-69 Fairlane/Torino mini-tubbed, tire size anyone?
« on: January 24, 2019, 01:46:06 PM »
I can measure all day long (feels like I have), but nothing beats experience. Has anyone here done a 68/69 retaining the original rails, notched or un-notched, lip rolled/stock?

I'd like to hear that an M&H 28/12.5/15 on a 10" wheel works, but any data is good data.

On mine we split the inner and outer cans, put a 2" strip of metal in between them, and pushed the inner right against the frame rail.  We removed & rolled the outer flange/lip and took a good sized pie slice out of the leading edge of the wheel opening (you can clearly see it if you look at the body line.  Car has been running on an M/T 10.5-31W tire and it just kinda damn near touches everywhere but does not really hit.  The 10.5W tire has over 13" of section width

Ah, thank you! It sounds like 12.5 section on a shorter tire puts me in a range I can work with.

My 66 Fairlane race car was done similar to what Barry described and I fit 30x10.5 slicks on 10" wheels without issue.  Car runs in the nines on that size....no need to go bigger.

Since this car is all the way apart, it sounds like moving the front half of the opening forward a bit might pay off later on. I recall that being the main problem area on my 64.

68 must have more room than 67, because my Falcon is same as the Fairlane for 67 and a 10.5x15 (like a Hooser 275-60x15) tire is about the max, on a 4.5" backspace.

68 is wider than a 67 and a 70 Torino is wider yet.
The 64 wheel openings are tiny, mine is moved 2 forward and has the lower edge angled forward too to get a 9 x 30"
