Rocker ajustments
« on: October 08, 2012, 09:23:10 AM »
Hey guys I was running my car the other day (SOHC) and all of a sudden I heard my rocker was a little noise, I got worried right away and shut it off pulled up a chair and had a beer and thought about it before I took off the valve cover. I got it apart and noticed that one of my adjustment pads was gone, I found both pieces and every thing looked OK but was wondering is this common? I will make a new one and put it back together but I am wondering if I should make all new ones?
I have never asked questions on the sight before but I figure this will reach some of the smartest guys in the motor world.

Thanks
Randy

Randy, are you talking about the swivel pad that is at the end of the adjustment screw?  Some people call that an elephant's foot.  They should not come off unless they were crimped on incorrectly, or the valve lash opened way up.  I assume that the adjustment screw itself is not damaged or broken?  So then, the ball end of the adjustment screw was contacting the top of the valve stem?

I've got spares of those at my place if you want to stop by and get one.  I've never had one of the feet come off the adjustment screw before, but I have broken some of the adjusters when the T&D rockers first came out.

Hi Jay no it didn't come off it broke that was my question is that common? I was going to make one but you have them I would get one from you although these are Munro rockers. I compared them to my T&D's and the adjustment screws and they are a different size and they are also a different size than the dove rockers I have also. I think I will have to make it but is sure is confusing why it happened. Looking at the ball on the screw and the 2 pieces of the foot it almost appears that it was hitting harder on the sides of the cup and not as much on the bottom of the ball.

Hmmm, I've never seen one break; that does seem pretty unusual.  I have a couple of Munro's rockers here too, in case you want the adjuster out of one of them - Jay

I could take you up on that but it might be better to make a few and have a few spares also, I will stop out some night and see how things are going I would like to see your machine up and running, I think I owe you a case of beer anyway.

I am, of course, always happy to accept free beer!  But I can't think of why you might owe me any...
