Cam Drive Pin

I seem to have lost my cam pin.  the book says it's a 5/16 x 1 1/2 "  dowel pin.    is this a simple dowel pin I can get at a parts store or is it special ?

I seem to recall it being solid but it's been so long I can't remember.  and the hole measures 5/16 so I don't think I can make one from a bolt.

Nothing special. With that said the definition of a standard dowel pin.  In accordance with ASME B 18.8.2, hardened ground machine dowel pins have a core hardness of RC 47-58 and a minimum case hardness of RC 60. Surface finish is 8 microns inch maximum.

Yes they are solid, I guess the easy way to tell is the surface will be very smooth and shiny and the ends are black. I usually grab one from the tool and die dept at work that I know is long enough then trim to fit. Remember you want it long enough to protrude in to the fuel pump eccentric but not so long that the washer contacts it. That same washer (at least .1 thick) should be large enough in diameter to partially cover the dowel pin hole if it should ever want to come out.

I see,  so if the washer holds it in then maybe I could cut one from a 5/16 grade 8 bolt shank .  it looks like it would be snug but not a drive it in with a hammer thing.

Your new camshaft will have one in the box.  BTW, it shipped, but they messed up and had it en route to me.  I had them stop it midway and turn it around to you.

I didn't expect it to come with one but that's great.  No problem on the shipping t's not holding me up I just got everything back from the machinist yesterday.

The new cam came with the right pin,  but it has a short one in it I can't get out. 

there must be a trick to this ?  I've tried big vice grips but the pin is hard as diamonds they slip off as soo as you hit them with a hammer.  should I grind a notch  or something to grip ?  I sure don't want to break it off in there.

In case someone else ever searches this.  I got it out by cutting notches in it a vice could grip it .  it came out very hard and took a big hammer and a brass pin.   the correct pin I had to knurl a little because it fit loose.  go figure.


Now I have to find a larger 7/16 washer that will cover enough of the pin to insure it doesn't work out.
