My kinder, gentler Galaxie.
« on: October 26, 2018, 07:06:30 PM »
Since I have removed my Galaxie from future DW or RMRW events I decided to detune it some to make it more palatable for cruise duties. Since my 521 needed some attention anyway I figured it was a good opportunity to put the 460PI motor back in it with the TKO600 I had stashed. So, instead of having a slightly nervous 600+ hp motor it now has a reasonably sedate 400+hp 460 with a bunch of torque. :)

Alan, what made you make the decision to never Drag Week it again? Having a smooth cruiser is a nice thing to have. That's why I want to keep my '65 pretty sedate, so I can go places without having to 'worry' about anything, which is why I'm keeping the old points ignition. Your '66 has earned it's rights to some cruising duties though, no doubt about that! :)

Alan, How about a brief run-down of the PI engine...Might be similar to the 460 in my 60 Starliner. Just the usual stuff, cam, carb, intake, head work, exhaust, etc... Thanks.

It is a real deal 460 PI motor removed from a 1974 Mercury Missouri Highway Patrol car. I got the complete motor at a swap meet in 1984 for the princely sum of $125.00. :)
It has been bored +0.030 with replacement TRW forged pistons. The heads are pretty much untouched D20E-AB units with Ferrea 2.19 int and 1.73 exh valves. The cam is a Comp XE274 flat tappet hydraulic and I am using Comp Magnum roller tip rocker arms. It has a Blue Thunder dual plane intake with a Holley 850 vacuum secondary carb although I may switch to a 750vs at some point. Mallory unilite dist and Hooker Super Comp headers for a '75 Torino.
Nothing killer with just enough cam lope to make it sound good idling. :) It is just a joy to cruise down the road. I have 3.89 gears in it and with the TKO600 at 70mph it's turning about 2100rpm.

Well I am wanting to go quicker and if I went any quicker in my Galaxie I would need to put a roll bar in it and I really don't want to do that. It will be sitting there in the wings waiting as a backup in case something happens to the Mustang. I tried to get it put together this at the last minute but I kept having setbacks with it as well when time ran out.
I took it on about a 170 mile round trip today to a swap meet and it was so nice to cruise in without any real cares about what if something broke. Before with the 521 I was constantly listening for telltale signs of a roller lifter going away and dreading the possibility being caught in a big traffic jam.

Yep, Fairly similar to mine, 460+.030", C8 heads with REV 2.19"/1.72" ex. with mild port work, Blue Thunder dual plane, 750 v/s Holley, mild hyd cam IIRC 272in/ 282ex with .520" lift, has a nice pleasant  rumble at idle. C6 from a 70 Torino 429 CJ going into a 3.00 gear. Makes for a nice highway cruiser.

The clutch pedal setup is pretty much stock. I did use heim joints on the ends of the clutch rod instead of the plastic bushings but other than that pretty much OEM. It took me about 2 years of scrounging salvage yards to come up with all the pieces. Manual trans 65-66 Galaxies are a little hard to come by.
