390 main bearing problem
« on: September 16, 2018, 05:01:34 PM »
Been trying to build the 390 for my 68 cougar for a while now and keep running into problems with the rear most main bearing with the thrust surface. It doesnt seem to matter what bearing set I buy, none of them will fit over the journal. So far I've tried clevite part numbers ms683p and ms685p and q sealed power that I cannot remember the part #, and they are too narrow to go over the journal in the block and seat. They will fit on the cap without any issue (a little snug, but pressed on by hand. Anyone ever come across this? Any suggestions?

Heo's got it...

If you're trying to fit the thrust bearing over the rear main cap, that's the wrong cap.

That is entirely possible, it's the first engine I've built. I took a ton of pictures so I would have an idea, and the camera I took them on got stolen. It just looked like it should go over that one with the groove that looks purpose made for that bearing

The location for the thrust bearing is spot faced for it.  It's the third bearing from the front if you have pictures.

Sometimes they are a little snug fit.

Engine is ready to go....then got layed off at work......cant proceed with the swap until I get some cashflow again. Its extra crappy knowing that i have an engine ready to roll.
