462 FE cam choice
« on: September 15, 2018, 07:50:53 AM »
Finally got my shortblock back from the machine shop for my 68 Mustang and now need to decide on the cam. It is a 428 stroked to 462 with Scat crank/rods and Probe 14791.030 pistons. It will have CJ heads/intake, matched up with close ratio toploader and 3.70 rear gears. I have on hand a Comp 292H but can't find any comparable builds for opinions. I did read in one post that you should advance it 4 degrees but did see the back story for this. I have another custom Oregon cam that wasn't designed for this application and also open for other suggestions.

Do you need vacuum for power brakes?

Couple somewhat similar builds from Barry's youtube channel

465 with 390GT heads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emYgEPVKY2s

465 with CJ heads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taZa5NCIBmY

462 with iron heads https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-l7QeiaN0M

I've done a handful of 462's with out-of-the-box Edelbrock heads and Performer RPM intakes, which should be around the same lines as what you're working with.

So you're working with pistons that have a 21cc dish.  Without finalized numbers, this is all bench-racing, but you should be at around 10:1 compression.  That means if you're wanting something with a lower peak rpm, you're gonna have to be careful about which lobes you choose, or otherwise you could end up with an engine that won't like being lugged with pump gas.

If you're wanting a flat tappet camshaft to help the budget a bit, I'd do something like this:

284/292 advertised, 235/244 @ .050", 113 LSA, 107 ICL, .565"/.568" lift.

That one would have 62° of overlap, which would work your brake booster well.  I'm aiming for a peak hp rpm of about 5500 rpm there, which I think would be a sweet spot with the trans and rear end gear.  You could shift it at 6000 if you're in the gas hard.

I would pair this cam up with a set of Crower Camsaver lifters.

No distributor gear swap is necessary.

Just as an FYI, your Comp 292H camshaft would have 72° of overlap and would make it harder to get a good brake pedal without the use of a vacuum reservoir.

Greg, I could also do a hydraulic roller for this one, but it would be on the ragged edge of making the vacuum you need.   In addition, you'd need a steel distributor gear.

291/299 advertised, 235/243 @ .050", 114 LSA, 106 ICL, .576"/.588" lift.

You could go to a little more aggressive lobe to help with vacuum, but it would be a tad noisier.

I do have power brakes and after cc'ing heads (73cc), and calculating cr right at 10 to 1, I thought I better get more experienced opinions. Sounds like the 292H may not be a good choice. Here is the Oregon cam specs which are closer to you Brent.

Oregon Cam: Hydraulic flat tappet, 110 Lobe separation, 236/242 @.050, 292/292 advertised, 1.73 ratio lift .569/.580, lobe center line 106 intake 114 exhaust
Springs: 110 seat and 280-300 open pressure (I have 924 springs)

Oregon Cam: Hydraulic flat tapped, 110 Lobe separation, 236/242 @.050, 292/292 advertised, 1.73 ratio lift .569/.580, Lobe center line 106 on take and 114 exhaust

72° of overlap on that one too.  Would make it hard on making vacuum.

That's the beauty of a custom camshaft.  All parameters can be nudged to put things where they need to be.

I like Brent's much better than Oregon's, and if you have the coin for hyd roller, it'll be hard to beat

Oregon's cam is a lazy lobe and will be fussier at idle, in fact it's sort of a blend between Brent's and the 292, with the benefit of neither.

FWIW, I haven't decided on my 462 yet, but it's likely going to be either a Bullet 282/282 236/236 112 on 106 solid flat, or a 280/284 230/236 112 on 106 hydraulic flat.  I have both, and both likely aren't that far off of each other, it depends how I feel on assembly day LOL

The Bullet was a torque monster in my 445 and pulled to about 5500 with a little more head and intake than you.  It likely could have used a bit more exhaust lobe though, but I can play with it using lash

So sounds like the ones I have are a no go and I need to go shopping. Brent when you get a chance throw a couple options together for me and let me know. I am interested if a custom roller would work as to what all I would need to change and the cost difference but also perfectly fine with flat tappet if need be.
Ross I assume your new 462 is going in your truck?

I have two of them going in the next few months, one for my truck and one for a 68.5 Mustang Coupe. Needless to say the Mustang will be a bit rowdier, but the truck won't be mild either.

The Mustang I will use a 240s hyd roller with BBM heads Brent built.  It's 4.30 geared car and should be happy street/strip.  The truck I am on the fence, either use one of the two I have or go a little milder.  Luckily for the budget, I am pretty frugal, so I will likely use one of the cams I have and spend some extra cash on the EFI

Ahh haven't heard of this Coupe you have and if anything like your others I'm sure it is nice. Mine is a 68.5 as well but didn't want to go to wild as it's an original paint car and would hate to ruin that having too much fun. Brent is going to fix me up with a hydraulic flat tappet so very glad I asked and appreciate y'alls input. Thanks!
