Yep, that carb makes a huge difference, I'm sure. I watch a lot of those homebuilt engine videos, including the really amazing radial types for airplanes. That guy also seems to have his camshaft worked out really well. Lots of those V8 engines start breaking up or just plain flatten out when they get to mid rpms or higher. I imagine a camshaft for that small of an engine follows different rules compared to what is typically known on full size engines. Either way, he has done an outstanding job of actually putting one of those things to use.
