Progress on 105 block
« on: August 02, 2018, 11:52:30 AM »
I finally got back from NYC. I checked on my 105 block and my machinist says he's not impressed because the block was only .040 thicker than my C
6ME block. I'm not going to bore it out more than .030 anyway. Gonna go with my eagle 428 crank and rods for a 417 co fe.

I have ran that setup for several years in a 66 fairlane bracket car. Just torn down for freshening.Very durable combination.Must have 100 runs on it mostly all ford stuff.

.040 is better!  But I would have expected more too, just goes to show that all the Ford blocks seem to be all over the map.

Did he mention if it was any more consistent from bore to bore than the 390?

What were you expecting?  Mirror 105 blocks do not have thicker cylinder walls but they do have less core shift than the DIF blocks.

All the cyls were good up to 428 leavingplenty of meat except # 5. If cut to 4.130 it would leave 1.35 on the thrust side. Its going to get a
030 overbore, decked, and line bored. I got some DR X to derust it. I'm going to do the oil mods clean up the block, debur and chase all threads and take it back to the machine shop.

I understood 1.35 on the thrust side was plenty?

I'm with George, a sturdy block with several rebuilds left in it.

X2....thicker cylinders are better.

Achieving a 428 bore with a 390 block is a black hole that has sucked many guys in.

Sorry for not replying earlier but since we got back from our vacation I've been non stop. Anyway, the 105 block had to go .040. He also line bored the mains and decked the surfaces. He's also doing all the lifter bores. Picking some light weight pistons with thin rings is next. I want to run pump gas if possible with my cam.

I finally got some pistons. I got the forged L2291 .040 pack with rings. I talked to my machinist and decided to put the piston at 0 deck and machine the valve pockets for proper clearance. Now for fitting the pistons and balancing the rotating assy.

Hey George :-)

Doin the same thing almost, Dr4 block, .040 over TRW forged coated pistons, 428 crank

Looks like Ima need around .087 off the tops of the pistons

Before that, gonna put a piston at zero and check valve pocket depth to see what needs done if any

Using 2.09/1.65 valves, top land to top of piston is .350 if I remember correctly

Forgot, mine are .013 in the hole with 3.78 crank

I went .040 on a mirror 105 390 block, 418 ci. Using 428 crank and rods. The shop will start fitting the pistons and balancing the rotating assay before assembling the short block. Im using 2.15 and 1.72 valves so the reliefs have to be enlarged for the lift I'm using. I'll post as the build goes along.

Make sure you check the clearance in the bore with the exhaust valve. It is very close to the cylinder wall with a cam that is lifting over 0.650. We built a 445 using a 40 over 390 block and got the stroker kit from Brent with his custom cam. The lift on the cam exhaust side is 660, at full lift with lash and Head gasket we only have 5 thousandth side clearance. Our valve sizes are 2.125 on the intake and 1.70 on the exhaust. It works, the motor runs fantastic, we have it in a 79 foxbody went from running high 12 with a 410 to running mid 11 with the 445 at Bandimere. Good luck with your build. Clint
