Cooling Question
« on: July 23, 2018, 09:08:20 AM »
Hello again,

I'm slowly making it through the '69 Mach 1, but I'm still concerned about cooling.  When I got the car, it had a stock-style 2-row radiator, downflow, stock water pump, and flex-a-lite.  It overheated a little and blew out some coolant in ~70f weather.

Later, I found that it had no thermostat.  Head gaskets are installed correctly.

Since then, I had a Northern aluminum radiator installed, a Spal electric push-fan, a TuffStuff supercool water pump, and a 180 thermostat.  It ran great until the v-belt launched off on the highway.  I since converted to 8-rib serpentine

I know pull is more efficient than push.  Any harm in running the push fan and a flex-a-lite water pump fan?  Any other suggestions?  I'm paranoid about overheating.

Try this fan with the clutch and you get the best of both worlds, lots of air flow and low drag. I run this with a 700 hp 520 Fe  in a 66 Fairlane and its works good so far.

Any issue with running straight off the water pump pulley with no clutch?  I'm not sure I'll have room to mount a clutch in there

Its only 2.25 inches with fan and clutch for depth.

I can definitely make that work.

Not recommended to do that.  The clutch is important to minimize fan speed and noise as well as power drain when the cooling is not needed.  The factory was able to fit the fan and clutch between the water pump and radiator...you shouldn't have an issue either.
