I replied to an add for fe parts locally. When I got there he had two 390 blocks, a c6me and mirror 105 with extra ribs, 3 flywheels, a bunch of rods and pistons, some pistons are forged dome, oil pan, various small parts and 2 complete sets of c8aeh heads. All for $150. . He wanted  $300 so I told him I'd give him 150 for the 105 block. He says take it all for 150.

I did the drill test on the 105 block and the thickest shank that I could fit between the cylinders was a 13/64. I tried to look for the 428 numbers but I didn't have a small flash light to look. Probably should try cleaning those areas and looking again. One set of rods has ARP studs. D4TE is casted in the lifter valley.

After cleaning the floor behind the center freeze plug it clearly shows 428 and it's standard bore at 4.050. I finally have a good block to go with all my race parts. I'll finish the budget 390 while all the parts go to the machine shop.

I had no idea that any 105's had a 428 in the water jacket. A few years ago I bought about a dozen blocks from a guy who had them all sonic-checked by a known hipo shop, now closed. Three of them were marked, and the seller said those all passed sonic well within reach of a 428 bore. All are 105's. Now, thanks to George, I get to slither into a storage shed at 120º, knock out the plugs, and look for 428 stampings amidst hordes of Black Widows. Or, I can have another beer and screw it until October.

George also said he brought home a C6ME block, he didn't say which one he saw the "428" in. If it's the D4TE I'd be interested in seeing pictures.

So the old "underbored" 428 thing, eh? I suppose it is possible they cast up a bunch and all don't machined to be a 428. Or possible they checked them before machining and the ones that were not suitable for 4.13" because of core shift or whatever became 390's ?

Guys, all the checks have been discussed before. All I did was read a bunch of articles and check every block I see. The block that i was talking about was the D4TE mirror 105 block. It is a 74 light truck 391. I didn't get the steel crank but I did get the harmonic balancer. The hole is huge so is the balancer compared to the 390 balancer that I also got. D4TE is casted on the side of the block and also on the lifter valley. It is a reinforced main web and it passed all the preliminary checks for an underbored 428 block. The 428 is hard to see. First I had only seen pictures of what to look for. I had to clean the floor of the center freeze plug really good before I finally saw the numbers. I had to use the sun light and maneuver the  block until it lit the area up so I could make them out. This is my first. The other block is another one of those that has no casting number on the side. I also got 2 complete sets of c8ae h heads. Now I have 3. Two engine separator plates, 1 2U crank and all the pistons and rods. Before I couldn't find a block, now I have 4! I have to deliver the 105 block to the machine shop to boil, check for cracks and cylinder thickness. My first block was good for up to .060. I'll get it back for a future build.

You may have heard this in the past George but have the machine shop pay close attention to the oil galleries off the cam to the head in the D4 block. Those seem to like to crack in there.

A 391 would be a medium or heavy truck engine, light trucks are F100, F150, F250 & F350, maybe just mis-spoke. It would still be nice to have pictures to document, along with the date code. We can help you post them if needed. The cast "428" can be a little faint, but I've been able to get good pictures with both a regular camera and a cell phone camera, maybe after you get the block cleaned. Your choice of course.

Yes I'll try and get a pic after it gets tanked. It's not greasy but it's got surface rust and junk at the coolant floor.
