Read the article. The second owner, Stan Sherman, lived in Canoga Park as did I at the time, but as I recall his shop was in Reseda. I don't remember how/why I wound up at there. I knew another shop owner in the area who may have pointed me. I have a NOSITB D-Locker that may have come from Stan.

Anyway, it was mighty neat car. When I was there it had already been re-lettered from King Cobra to PoonTang. We know poon is a nickname for a girl's cootchie. That kinda fit Stan's "rough around the edges", but congenial, persona. Now, related to that somewhat, is an item that is not evident in the pictures in this article. See that, across the trunk lid when in King Cobra livery, it says "He who snoozes loses". I distinctly remember that Stan had replaced that, in much smaller script, with "Better stick your foot in it, 'cuz second place ain't shit". It was something that stuck in my mind. Gee.

I recall returning there with my Kodak Instamatic to snap that trunk and the rest of the car. I haven't seen those pics in years, but I might know where they are buried in all my crap. Stan was kind enough to fire up the beast uncorked for me. It sound great, of course, because a Jet is a Jet.

Isn't all that standard on a Shelby? If they ordered it for racing they'd have got manual steering and drums if they could.

You are assuming that Mattingly ordered it. I think that was specced out by the dealer and Mattingly bought it off the floor. The beginning of the article mentions that he drove it on the street for a while first. Perhaps not real sure if he wanted to hack it into a racer? That sound plausible? I know I'd think twice about it. I think if he was looking for a racer, he would have purchased a lighter, cheaper, Mustang. The Shelby was maybe an emotional buy, sittin' there all pretty in the showroom.

As for a magazine feature, I don't recall. Lots of cars in that area and time were in print. Maybe in Super Ford?

      I've seen it here in the So Cal area for years. Car shows , car auctions , etc. IMHO  it would do better if it were restored back to a stock 69 GT500 condition. The market for ex '69 drag cars is not as strong as it is for original cars unfortunately.

I talked with a guy a few years ago that have a 69 gt 500 convertibel
he bought 76-77 was like a new car. He put on fiberglass fenderflares
and painted it red candy made a new crushed velvet interior....He regret
that today

In general, I would agree. I think cars that were "National Record Holders" or similar would out-value a stocker. This car seems to have been a one-track pony (see what I did there) that had no country-wide notoriety. One would think, however, if there was a large gap in value between stock and modified, that somebody would have snatched this car up and reverted it back to showroom.

I'd love to know if it's currently for sale. If I had it, it would go back to POONTANG!!. 'Cuz that's how I roll!

Been trying to find info on another SFValley Mustang from then called Fantasia. Was a showcase from a custom painter. I seem to remember color graphics shot onto a white car. Anyone?

I remember the Fantasia van from the blvd but the mustang is hazy. You know who might know is Brad the owner of QMP engines. He’s prolly a bit young but he’s good with that stuff.

Ah hell yes good job! Great link, too bad I didn't find myself on that page. AFAIK, I had the only "hopped-up" GT/CS cruising VNB. The Good Old Days. [sniff].    My car had the same hood scoop as Fantasia. Will put one back on. Still have GT/CS.
