Tunnel Wedge intake, how streetable?
« on: May 17, 2018, 11:13:51 AM »
Considering buying a BBM Tunnel Wedge intake but concerned about it's street manors.  Would be going on a 30 over 428, I haven't decided if I'm going to install a stroker kit but it might be an option.  Heads are currently a set of C6ae-Rs with 2.09 1.65 valves.  Cam will be hydraulic roller but I haven't chosen grind yet.  Car is 67 Cougar with 4 speed.  Rear gears are 2.73s (may change).  Car will be a weekend show/shine cruiser.  Would like some opinions and thoughts on combos before spending the cash. Jay thoughts??

That's a high RPM manifold, especially on a 428.  I know others might disagree, but I wouldn't consider putting one on an engine of less than 480 cubic inches.  And even then, you're giving away low and midrange torque to a good dual plane.  Your gears also aren't right for that manifold.  I think you'd be much happier with a nice medium riser 2X4 dual plane intake, if you can find one...

I agree with Jay on this one.  However, if you wanted to go single 4V, I would suggest a Performer RPM with the logos all removed, and make it look like a stock intake.  A simple clean up of the intake ports the last 1/2" will be all that is needed.  Joe-JDC

X3....completely wrong intake for that combination.

You need to focus on low end grunt with that rear gear.

x4.

I ran a Dove TW on my 428CJ but the truck has 4.56 gears and a wide ratio box.  The BBM has even bigger ports.
If you want quads, try a low riser or med riser 2x4.  It will have better low speed manners.

What's the best streetable gear you'd run?

I've been looking for a reasonably priced C7ZX-9425-A or repop of it for along time with no luck. Was hoping one of these might be streetable but it looks like a big no. :(  Any leads on a C7ZX-9425-A would be appreciated.

I think 3.70s are a good compromise between performance and streetability.  Of course Ford put up to 4.30s in their performance cars of the era, but those are pretty tough to deal with at highway speeds.  Even 3.50s would be a major improvement over the gears you have now...

Here's a C7ZX-A on eBay, only $563 at the moment, looks like the exhaust crossover needs attention, but that wouldn't necessarily scare me if the price is right. Cosmetically a little rough near the casting number.

Someone needs to really do a few hundred 2x4 MR intakes.....  Seems like folks are always needing them, but BT trickles them out and originals are priced beyond what most folks can afford.

All those BT's that were on ebay went away in about a week. Think they were listed for $960

Unless I'm missing something I don't see a link.

If I were to change out the gear, (I have access to 3:70s), I'm guess the intake is still not a good choice for a weekend street toy correct?    I can see why, given the design, that it would be for big cubic drag cars.

The opposite in my opinion. You don't have to take my word for it though. I'm one of those nuts that thinks mo gear is mo betta! :) If it is a weekend toy, I would not hesitate to throw some gear at it..........At least a 3.70 or a 3.89 is still "streetable", even with a mild hydraulic. I use the term streetable LOOSELY. I ran a 3.89 gear in my car with 27in tires and a mild hyd. cam that was 224/234@.050". I have a wide ratio trans, too. I saw no ill effects even when I switched to a 4.33 gear other than mileage. Smiles per gallon increased! If you're going to be cruising 65-70mph, I wouldn't  go crazy on the gear if you are running a 27-28in tire. I don't do much highway driving, so I like the gear.
