This particular model can test 11 types of material, and as you can see, three types of cast iron. Only one of those cast iron settings will be accurate on our FE blocks ( and do you you think I’d have been smart enough to write down which one?   >:( ). But as has been posted you can check your reading against a machined and measurable spot on the block with a micrometer or caliper, like the China wall or at the top of the block between two cylinders. Here’s a picture from the instructions.

I remember that i had to check on the Chinawall wich setting to use
I used regular grease on the probe and seamed to work fine

KY works well too.  You basically need a couplant to give the soundwave a path to travel through.

I called Jay this morning and talked with him about the unit. He told me how to shape the probe and how the settings worked. He highly recommended it. I`m gonna bite the bullet.
