problem with my 427
« on: August 20, 2017, 10:02:13 AM »
AS some of you remember the 2016 Beaver Springs drags gave some of us problems. Mine started at the first run on Saturday. I blew a fuel pump, so back on the trailer she went. Took all last summer to get it going again. This year has been so busy I didn`t touch the car till yesterday. Natch I had to charge the battery. So I fired it up and noticed I only had 8PSI on the oil gauge. Shut down and went to check the oil, Dam it found milkshake on the stick, look in the expansion tank and its low. Now I`m wondering if I cracked the block last winter. I can see antifreeze in the tank but can`t get a tester full of fluid to check the freeze level. It was fine so last fall so I`m a little stumped as to what happened. Now I gotta take it out and do an autopsy to find the problem. Talk about a bad hair day.

Dang thats a bummer, think I would start by pumping just a little positive air pressure in through the rad cap and listen for gurgling sounds.

That stinks, hopefully a head gasket failed when you were running it hard at the races.  Let us know

You can do a leak-down test to check for say a cracked cylinder b/4 teardown. It's a relatively cheap diagnostic tool (E-Bay, etc.). Cheaper is to pressurize the radiator via the cap opening (hand pump caps or a do-it yourself cap with a air hose nipple).

Tough break Garry, I don't remember it getting that cold last winter.  As previously stated hope its just a head gasket or even an intake gasket, wouldn't be unusual.  If memory serves you're running 2 4's on an original manifold and that old aluminum can get cranky.
