Anybody run the RobMcQ starter solenoid straight down?...
« on: August 16, 2017, 09:15:40 AM »
I was installing my new RobMcQ starter last night and was debating on running the solenoid straight down to keep it away from all header heat. The recommended clearance is 1/2" minimum, and it has about 3/4" clearance in the 'up' position, but if in the 'down' position, it wouldn't see any header heat at all. My only reservation is that it would then be exposed more to rain and water. There seems to be a vent or drain in the solenoid area, but still not sure if it's a good idea or not. Has anyone run it in the 'down' position, and if so, have you experienced any issues with it in regards to water exposure? The instructions say it can be ran in any position, but I'd like to hear from people with experience.

On the plus side, I didn't have to take my headers loose. All I had to do was drop the idler arm and let the drag link droop down. The starter wiggled out fairly easily that way (first time I've had to remove a starter in my Mach with the headers on). I did the ring gear depth measurement, and although it's on the high end, it's still in the acceptable range. The RobMcQ starter goes in MUCH easier than the stock unit. I'm also going to go to a heavier cable than the stock type that's on it now.

That's the way I ended up putting it in my truck. Its been 4 years and 14000 miles since. I don't drive the truck in winter but I have driven it in rain. Don't have much choice when it is used for a vacation vehicle.

Anyhow, no issues to report. Great starter by the way.

Thanks, Erich. 4 years and 14,000 miles seems like it should be a good enough test..lol  I never drive it in the rain, but I won't be able to control the weather during Drag Week.
