Royce B. Famous again
« on: July 15, 2017, 09:42:40 PM »
Forum member Royce B. Got some Hot Rod Magazine press tonight when they posted his War Bird on Facebook. It's getting some attention. I'm guessing Royce is at the Meltdown Drags this weekend. I'm not sure which engine he has in it presently. Maybe if he has time he will fill us in on the event.

One cool car for sure!

I wonder though if Royce has thought about another body to switch on form time to time. Long ago (and far way...hah!) some of the west coast funny car teams had a 2nd altered body they'd snap on to run as Fuel Altereds at various meets (like Lions. OCIR. etc.). Heck, he could have a 1/2 bodied, chopped '53 Lincoln or Merc, ala' the old Jack Chrisman GT-1 '66 Comet.

Here's a great picture of Royce and the War Bird squaring off with our local Minnesota Y-Block legend and owner of Yestertech, J.C.

A 600 hp 292Y Block would be quick enough to be scary!  It is possible with just 375 cubic inches.  Joe-JDC

Interesting...  I just got back from Meltdown.. Huge turnout. They had to close the staging lanes because they were backed up into the pits.. I got 5 runs in 3 days. Chevy engines were popping like popcorn down there.  There must have been 20 oildowns and parts scatters.. Guys step up to 700 horse on their old Chivies and then run them once a year..  I have never been to an event with so much down time..
My car ran a best of 10.11  Thought I could sneak into the 9s, but not this weekend. Car currently has a 333 Ford Y block with a dual plane and 750 holley. This is the engine that made 460 horse at engine masters last year.. The Warbird has had an assortment of engines over the years. 3 different Lincoln Y blocks and 2 different Ford Y Blocks. It has had single carb, dual quads, and Hilborn mechanical for induction over the years.. C-4 and a Frankland quickchange out the back. Body is a fiberglass 56 T bird. The Chassis is a pro built 150 inch WB altered from Neil and Parks. It is certified to 7.50

If I put a Cammer in it, it would look bitchin, but I would be looking to hire a driver.. Any volunteers?    (Keep in mind the body is held on by hose clamps)

500 horse is about the upper limit for me in this car.. that gets consistent 10.0s and occasional 9.90s.. I really don't want to step up to an NHRA license and all the additional safety gear required.. Also things start to happen faster than my aging brain can react to them at this speed...A hard tail altered chassis is quite a bit different to drive than a full body, full suspension car.. You feel every twitch and bump.

Quite a few FEs were present at Meltdown.. Galaxies Fairlanes Comets, plus my two favorites.. Deans427's "Gray Ghost"427 powered 56 Fairlane (mid 10s), and the SOHC powered 55 "Scarelaine" (mid 9s)

Deans427 says he will be stepping up his game by going to Y block power in the near future  LOL
