Low Oil Pressure.....my own damn fault!!
« on: June 08, 2012, 12:01:52 AM »
Years ago I built a  428 for my 76 F-250 4X4.
I did the infamous "Oil Mods". It has been so long I can't remember exactly what all I did, but I recall removing the oil plugs and running a drill bit from the rear to the front. Also recall some mods around the oil filter adapter. I did NOT install the Holley jets to restrict oil to the top end. Engine had 50 psi at idle until it warmed up to 150 and then dropped to 12-15.
Life got in the way of fixing it and I reluctantly parked it.
I am now ready to get after it and drop it in my 58 Fairlane.
My question (finally) is "What did i hurt?"
I'm assuming that leaving the jets out to the top end have something to do with it, but......

I don't think you hurt anything.  12-15 psi at idle is just fine, especially if you are running 10W-40 or similar weight oil.   I'd throw in the restrictors and run it.

Unless your Idle speed was 1000 RPM don't worry about it

Run it.
As long as the oil pressure goes up with the tach you're not hurting anything
I'd put the restrictors in teh heads - usually good for a couple pounds at idle that make you feel better...

Any suggestions on what size Holley jet to use for the restriction?

I'd try .060 to .070, watching the top end to see how it looks.

I agree it wont hurt anything

However, if its out, I'd probably check the mains.  If they are loose it'll bleed oil pressure.

The other likely culprit is cam bushings.

Thanks to all for the responses!!!
I have to swap the truck pan for the car pan anyway, so I might as well take a look at the mains,
look for mung in the bottom of the pan etc. After reading the forum's opinions,  I have a feeling everything thing is fine but I'm  real nervous about oil pressure, as oiling problems are why I pulled the 352.
It was getting tired and had some noisy lifters that would  quiet down on their own. The last straw was when I heard what sounded like all the lifters collapsing at once. Pulled the valve covers and it was bone dry on top of the heads!
