unilite dist
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:37:14 PM »
I have a bunch of new mallory unilite distributors
i bought years ago. Anyone out there know the
pn for FE dist. or where i can get some info on
Pn so i can identify what distributors i have.

They had a real bad reputation around here
Is there any thruth in that or is it owner malfunction
many of them is stripped off the infrared eye
and thats whats rumored to stop working.
I have never runned one so i dont know

Mallory's 332-428 FE part number is 4755301.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MAA-4755301/

I've had great luck with Unilites in SBF's and folks on the other FE Forum have had similar good luck.

That said, many tales of woe abound on major automotive websites, not just Ford sites either.  I've come to believe that a.) poor grounding b.) not using a ballast resistor when called for or c.) using the wrong coil are the main reasons the modules go bad. Heck, I've heard and read where fellows burned up 3 modules in a row yet failed to check the Mallory instructions or website to determine if something else (see above!) may have been the real culprit.

Opinions will vary on this topic, for sure.... ::).

Looking in an old Mallory catalog from the 80's I see there was also a PN 3755301 and a PN 3855301 ( tach drive ).

They work well, just need some additional care and feeding at setup to be real reliable

Triggering a CD box, they last nearly forever, the issue is when someone sticks one in and has too much running voltage to the coil.  When the field collapses due to the trigger of the unilite, it can overwhelm the backside of the module and kill it quickly.  If you limit the coil to around 10V, they last a long time

Regardless, best way to set them up is feeding the CD box, no chance of it happening when it's triggering the box.

I have a Unilite on my  Early Bronco and I  ran one for years on my 76 F-250 with no problems at all.
I followed the supplied instructions to the letter and am very satisfied with the distributors.

The first time I used a Mallory distributor was in the family 1953 Merc flathead. I've never used any other sort of aftermarket diz except a Mallory due to the kindness the guys at the Mallory facility here in Detroit showed to a 16 year-old kid. When the Unilite design came out I started using them and have ever since. Simply pay proper attention to the instructions.

I too, have had very good luck with them and no issues. I have only lost one eye. But for the amount of miles put on.... No big yank!
