Rory's 59...
« on: May 26, 2017, 04:05:34 PM »
I pestered Rory until he sent me a few shots of his '59 that he's restoring. With the 428 he's building for it, I imagine it'll scoot a bit better than when it left the factory.

Super nice looking car! It takes a LOT of paint to cover one of these things. Can't wait to see it done with all the chrome on it!

But Rory, what's the deal with those skimpy exhaust pipes? I just noticed 'em  :)

Thats just the old tailpipe from the 332s single exhaust system, rest assured a dual exhaust system with at least 2 1/2" pipes will be installed before the car hits the road! You can see in the background, my buddy has a couple of rotiseries, (He mostly does 55,6,and 7 Chevs, which always seem to need major floor and body mount rust repair). Since my 59 will be a non show quality driver, and the floors were in excellent condition,, he left the body on the frame, and instead did the work on a "frame on" rotiserie, which attatches to the wheel studs.  In these photos it is still on that rotiserie. The car can not spin 360  degrees, but it can go 90 degrees, so at least you are not having to weld overhead. Considering a 59 2 door sedan will never be a particularily valuable car, it just did not make any sense to spend 20 or 30 grand on a show quality, body off restoration paint job. I am hoping to have no more in the car than a new FWD sedan would cost. Time and poor book keeping will tell (roughly), how close I wind up to that goal.

It's Rory, of course it's a stick ;D

I couldn't see that 428 trying to breathe through that straw, so figured there had to be something else in the works. With the looooong tailpipes that thing will take, it should sound good. These cars ride fantastic, and with a good set of shocks, that should really improve as well. Did this car live it's life up north, or is it a transplant from southern areas? Hard to believe it's that solid coming, from your area.

You could probably have parked that Polo inside the trunk of that retractable if it weren't for the center box in the trunk. MAN those trunks are huge! My dad had a '57 and '59 retractable sitting out back when I was growing up (part of a 98 car graveyard). Sadly, long gone now.

Way ahead of ya. Already have the 15x8 steel wheels and the stock dog dish hub caps fit them just fine. Just trying to decide if the wheels will get painted body color, or black, (or maybe silver.)
