More 428 Blocks for sale
« on: March 27, 2017, 02:53:39 PM »
I have four more of the industrial 428 blocks available.  All are standard bore, and all have the extra webbing around the mains, and the ribs on the side of the block.  I'd prefer not to ship, but I will be going to the FE Reunion and could deliver one there, or along the way from Minnesota to Beaver Falls, if someone is interested.  Brief description and pictures plus sonic data below:

Block #14:  Standard bore, hot tanked, 4L21 date code, some rust in the bores but should come out at 0.030" or 0.040" over, $950

Block #17:  Standard bore, hot tanked, 4E1 date code, some rust in the bores but should come out at 0.030" or 0.040" over, $950

Block #18:  Standard bore, hot tanked, date code not readable, sleeves in #4 and #8 but it appears that the engine was running with those sleeves in it, so I assume the installation is good.  Bores look really good on this one, might even clean up at 0.010" or 0.020" over, $900.

Block #19:  Standard bore, not hot tanked, 4A28 date code, this one had a retaining clip failure and one side of cylinder 3 is grooved, might come out at 0.060" over but it would probably be best to install a thin sleeve in that cylinder.  Bores also look very good on this one, might only need 0.020" over, $800.

Respond here, or email (jayb@fepower.net), or call (952-428-9035) with any questions.  Thanks, Jay

Hi Jay,
I searched and and couldn't find it but, I thought you had pointed out in another thread about 428 industrial blocks about the shape of the coolant holes on the deck being a particular shape. If that is correct what is it?
Thanks Scott.

Its not just the industrial 428 blocks, all 428 blocks, at least the ones from DIF, have a different water jacket opening at the deck than a 352 or 390 (or 427) block does.  The pictures you arre looking for are in the 427 industrial block thread; link below.  This is a good way to distinguish a 428 block from a 390 block.

I'll take block #17 if still available (will take 14 if 17 not available).  I'll be at Beaver Springs, can PM here to handle how you'd like payment.  Thanks!

Yes, I still have #14 for sale, still inside the shop (if that's what you were asking).

Yes. It looks like a good block from the photo and your infomation. Just don't want another 428 block that the cylinders must be bored 40 over. They looked fine until the machining prooved otherwise.

So...I don't understand why you don't want to go 0.040 over?  Pretty common to do that with 428 blocks, in fact one of the dyno mules I did for my book is a 0.040 over block.  FYI the #14 block has some rust in the bores, I'm guessing it will need to go at least 0.030 over to clean up the bores, and it might need to go 0.040 over.  Hard to say until you get it in the boring machine...

Sorry Jay, I went .030 over with my first 428 and several people told me that's getting the bores pretty thin.
Seems like everybody has a different idea, but I'll go by what ever you say.

I just had my one of my 428 CJ blocks sonic checked at a fresh +.030, and it will be safe to +.065 or so.  The only way to know for sure is to have the block sonic checked by a reputable machinist.  With the pistons available today, you can sneak up on just about any bore size you want.  +.035, +.038, +.040, etc.  It is cheaper to hone a good block and order a set of custom pistons and rings than start over with another block. JMO, but I have a block that has a set of custom pistons +.014" just to keep the cylinder walls as thick as possible.  Joe-JDC

Wow, .065....that's amazing.

On another forum, like I mentioned a few said my .030 was risky.
I still don't know much about FE's, so I'm researching.

I need to discuss my 427 Cobra replica new engine build with you guys that know your sh**,...on FE's.
Do you have any for sale that's been tested Joe ?

Just to amplify what Joe said, I've never seen a 428 block that wouldn't go 0.030" over, and lots of them will go 0.060" over.  I think over the years the myth that you can't bore an FE block very far has been blown out of proportion.  Just as an example, a lot of people will have a heart attack if you think about going more than 0.030" over on a 427 block.  But I've got one that is 0.060" over, with one thin spot at the bottom of one bore that is less than 0.080" thick, according to the sonic check.  That engine was used for my book, has a good couple hundred dyno pulls on it and makes up to 675 HP, depending on the intake.  FE blocks are tougher than a lot of people give them credit for...
