stroker 390, edelbrock heads, quench pistons?
« on: March 18, 2017, 05:39:16 PM »
A friend of mine is considering rebuilding the 390 in his 73 f250 for pulling a heavy enclosed trailer. Ideas are stroke it, E heads, Performer RPM, truck headers, 9:1, 3.73 gears, big tall tires.  Is there an off the shelf piston (cast or forged, not custom made) that will work and get some decent quench? Or a kit?

Thanks, Joel

You will need a custom to get to 9:1 with a 445 and Edelbrock heads.

Thanks. How about the same combo with less compression? What is available?

You will need to be around 10-10.5 to take advantage of most off the shelf pistons.

I have pistons here that are both custom and on the shelf.  I can get to 9.4 with the CPs I keep here, with  different valve job and a little chamber fluff.  The rework on the Ed valve job and chamber work results in 4-5 cc more chamber volume and around +30 cfm from .200 through .550.  The dish is a mirror of the chamber, and has a flat quench side, so with lower timing requirements, the 9.4 static would work just fine.

Joel, just trying to give you good information. Pistons are on the shelf here.  Would not have to be modified or ordered......seemed like from your post he did not want to have the hassle.  You mentioned quench, and I do have such a thing available.  The above was not intended to come across as an "ad".........

Cost was the reason we were thinking of avoiding custom pistons. Maybe we are thinking wrong on that. Advice that includes products you or anybody else sells is fine with me. How else will I know who to have him call?  He is not on the web. Thanks

I could be unaware of it, but I don't think there are any cast stroker pistons out there.  Most all the forged "kit" pistons are in the same price range.   I mentioned the head work just kinda thinking he might already have heads that might need a tune up??.....if he has no heads yet, the BBM heads with the standard package are hard to beat in the value department.  They are also easy to get to 77-78 cc with the right valve depth and top cuts that don't hurt flow.  Would put you real close to your target static c/r....

SRP 271155
I do not inventory them, but they are a normal catalog item and should be in stock somewhere.  I have used a few sets,
Dome volume published as 26cc with a 1.325 compression distance.
Calculating to .020 in the hole on a 10.170 OE deck height
If that 40 year old block needs a .020 haircut you get your tight quench and 9.4:1 with 72cc heads
