2nd attempt putting some color on the Mustang

This is Silver Blue metallic and it looks MUCH better! I also have a sample of Guardsman Blue metallic that I will try but I really like this color.

I had a 65 in i think Caspian blue metallic, a Little bit darker
than that.  it was a color i liked  with a a white vinyl top
and white pistripe tires on TQ thrust wheels

Looks good, Alan, from the pictures it appears you got a nice even metalflake on that panel.

Yep, sign me up.  The color and finish look good.  Yours is a medium color, the lighter metallic colors tend to stripe if you don't keep the gun perpendicular to the work surface and a bit farther away as you go (a bit more fog as Jay alluded to, but wet enough to be "smooth" without excessive orange peel.)  Another practice suggestion is to get the panel down to a height and angle that would more closely represent the position when actually shooting the car.  Gives you a chance to get used to keeping the gun square.  Then also, a "reach over" that would simulate hood and roof surfaces.

I was VERY surprised how it ended up. On my first coati had an orifice clogged in my gun and it streaked horribly. On the next coat it was better but I don't think I had my pattern quite right. On the last coat I pulled gun back some and that kind of blended it all in.

Do you guys think I'll be alright if I paint it in pieces, then put it together or should I assemble it first? I am concerned that the metallic may end up looking different if I do it in pieces. But I am afraid if I do it assembled I will have a hard time keeping track where I've been and I might exceed the flash time trying to get it all shot at once.

With a metallic I think I would do the whole exterior at once, just to be on the safe side.

I paint everything apart. I buy two gallons of base when I'm painting a classic Mustang. I take one gallon and mix it a lot and separate into qt cans this is for the final coat. I spray the first two coats from the other gallon plus three coats inside the trunk, back of hood and deck lid. Final coat on the outside of the body I use the qt cans and making sure I stir each qt the same before spraying. The metallic wants to settle in the bottom of the can and it easier to mix qt cans and get the color to match. You will have paint left over in the qt cans but if you have a problem and need to respray you have some of the original paint for the last coat.

Alan, did you notice the off shades on my car? How the doors don't quite match the rear quarters and how there's a fade between the door and front fenders? It bothers the heck out of me and is very noticeable. That was from painting the car body and fenders, hood and doors, on the same day...but the body was in one booth and the rest was in another. Metallics can be really unforgiving if they're not perfectly matched, especially once they're in the sun. I'd do it all together. You can even notice it in the picture below, and I purposely pick pictures that minimize that effect. It's bugging the heck out of me just thinking about it 

And just to add, that paint job was done by a good friend of mine who has been in the business for over 40 years doing professional work and is a major car hobbyist. He felt bad about it and wanted to redo it, but at that point I just wanted it done (read; SICK of sanding!). Now, I wish we had redone it.

Actually Doug I didn't notice. Your car is so clean! Even though it will push me back some time wise I think I will go ahead and put the car together. I don't have the hood fitted yet so this will allow me to do that before I paint it.
 I know what you mean on non matching metallic. When they painted my Galaxie as they were removing the tape a piece of paint lifted off the rear deck between the back glass and trunk so they had to repaint a spot there and it doesn't match. But same as you, I just wanted my car back so it's still there.

Outside all together. A few inches of gun distance difference, a few pounds of air pressure difference, a little paint viscosity difference will all have an effect on how the metallic lays. Especially the newer high metallic colors. Buy more than you need, mix it all together, save 2 gets of color. 46 years painting.

Thanks guys for all the advice! Believe I need all the help I can get. I really do like that color but I sprayed my test panel with Guardsman Blue and I really like it too. I may have to slip a coin or something!

I like that Guardsman Blue better, but that's JMO,  which of course doesn't matter.
