New Boss 302 Mustang - What do you guys think?
« on: April 16, 2011, 11:24:51 PM »
Just got the latest issue of Hot Rod, and there it is on the cover.  By all accounts its a screamer.  Anybody ELSE thinking about going down to the Ford dealership for a test drive?

I was just at our local dealer; the F-150 Eco Boost I ordered back in January finally came in and I was there picking it up. Didn't see any Boss 302 there, but they had a couple of Roush cars.

I have to say that the Eco Boost F-150 is damn impressive. I had sold my 08 F-250 Power Stroke and ordered this F-150 and I really liked the old truck before, but this new one is even better! It is by far the nicest truck I've ever been in and it has unbelievable power!

From what I have read they are awesome.  7500 rpm engine. 12.3's at 115-116 mph bone stock.  High 11's with no mod's other than drag radials.  Oh, and they corner and stop pretty good, too.  I even think they're a good value for the money ($44,000?) if you could get one without getting gouged by the dealer because they're so desirable, and limited in number.

Only bad thing, in my opinion, is the garish paint schemes.  Holy crap!  (that's Verdamptescheisse auf Deutch!)  The paint schemes are over the top.  But then again the '69 Boss 302's were similar.

I would really like the blue and white version if it just had the white C-stripe.  Maybe you could give the dealer an extra grand to paint the top and hood blue, keep the paperwork and call it a "Dealer Special", so as not to totally ruin the value.

+1.  That B302 is the best street Mustang to come out since the original.  Maybe next year they'll offer a few different color schemes.  That would make me seriously commit to lobbying the wife and convincing the truck to develop expensive mechanical issues  ;)
A careful study of failure will yield the ingredients for success.

I think it would be cool if Ford did the Bullitt Mustang again and used the Boss 302 engine in it.  They could leave the racier suspension, wheels, and quad exhaust, etc., exclusive to the Boss 302 to keep it distinguished from the Bullitt.  With this hypothetical Bullitt Mustang you'd get the Boss 302 straight line performance in a more sedate looking and cheaper package.  It could possibly be priced halfway between a regular GT and the Boss 302.

what ya think?

It's the first Mustang I've seen since buying my 2004 Mach 1  that I would consider trading it in on. However, since I have only clocked 28,000 miles on my Mach in 7yrs it's hard to justify the new and high payment. Plus, my Mach can still get me in plenty of trouble with it's now paltry 305 hp.

Despite the BOSS 302s cool specs I don't think there has ever been so much disincentive as right now to not buy a new Boss 302 or any other Mustang.  The  disincentive is one word as mentioned in the above reply in odering a new truck: ECOBOOST.
To me the ECOBOOST motor is obviously years ahead of anything else offering a small engine with big engine power across the band, proven by FORD durability and fuel efficiency.  Obviously all FORD motors will soon follow in the EBs path (the GTs new 5.0 already has the bosses in the head castings for direct injection).   You just know unless the "economy" shit hits the fan that in the next few years BOSS and other MUSTANGs will be ECOBOOST based with that advantage.

I finally got onto the Ford web site today and took a good look at all the photos of the Boss 302 cars on the site.  After looking at them for a while, I have to say that I don't really like the accent color painted roofs that they have on the cars.  Seems to me if they just put the Boss stripe down the side, that would have made for a more elegant appearance.

My favorite color scheme for those cars was the '70 Boss 302 striping setup.  It would be nice if they could duplicate something more like that...

The car is cool, really what most of us would want as the GT.
The engine is the star though, the rest of the car is just a well tuned Mustang.
I've been saying lately that if the new 5.0 crate motor came out or was even leaked before I dropped the near $8k in my FE and install I would have notched the shock towers in my Mustang to install it instead.
I love my FE but I know I would drive the car much more if I got double digit gas mileage...

I am at a point in life where I need to make a distinction between "fun cars" and "necessary transportation".   I cannot justify not doing my own work on a "fun car". So the complexity of new cars limits them to "necessary transportation" and that won't be including any Mustangs.

That might change in a few years as our kids are growing up fast and hopefully I will someday have the time to work on those monsters. I hope by then the cars are designed to be service friendly and have modular wiring.

With the performance work those around me have done, and I've done,to late model Fords it seems the engines hold up well to the normal tuning type mods that add 100 or so HP and they still are not tempermental in traffic.
Even if the plan is to race on the weekends out of town, driving the car, most of what breaks is the same FE or Mod.Clutch, rear,u joint. With an FE add rockers, shafts, cam going flat, water pump, rear main leak, fuel pump...and the fact even the gaskets are not stocking parts at most parts stores. Unless you happened to get a bad one the new mods will go 100,000 miles with just an oil change!(but change the plus if you race it)
But they still don't fit our old shock tower Fords.

Notice they don't show it in the Hot Rod article?
I've seen the new mustangs at the dealer and I just don't like the rear.
I had an 07 GT, and it was a really fun car to drive, with another 100 hp it would have been perfect.
I like the looks of the 07 mustang so much better.
Here's a link to a rear shot:

I agree, I really dislike the look of the tail lights on the past few years of Mustang. The tapered outside ends look tacky in my opinion, the 2005-2007(?) rectangular tail lights look so much better.
