what to do
« on: January 22, 2017, 03:36:19 PM »
i guess i have a good problem,if there is such a thing.i have a 66 comet with a 433,cj heads,pi intake msd, holley, etc.my problem is i only have 1000 miles on this engine and its running great, couldnt be happier, but for xmas i got a set of bbm heads, rpm intake, coated super comps,hs rockers.its running so good right now and only 1000 miles on it i hate to tear it down.but i should be plenty happy when im done,if i do it.my other option is to buy a new block and stroker kit and just build a second engine for later or my next project,as a am looking for another comet or fairlane now. what to do?

What to do?

First introduce me to your Santa Claus.....wow.....what excellent Christmas presents.

Second, slap those parts on and let her eat.  It will be a huge transformation.

If but a second engine to build up, that way I could enjoy the car while I'm building the next engine.  That is actually what I am doing right now, building my next engine while driving the current one.

If your first engine is running that good, then I'd say build another. Different heads with totally different flow characteristics might not be the perfect combination for your current cam. Hard to say there. When I find a combination that works really well, I like to keep it.

But if you need a reason as to WHY you should build another engine....well, there's just no helping you. ;D

I'm with building another engine.  Even if it's going in the same car, you get to enjoy it without having to push it around while work is being performed or your waiting for parts.  I figured that out a while back.  No rushing involved, something out of the budget?  Now you have time to wait and you can still drive.

i could put that stuff on it now and start a strokker shortblock and transfer everything to it when the time comes.i have been a big fe fan since i was about 11 when my dad bought a 63 1/2 galaxie with a 390 in it.he gave it to me when i was 17.i drove it a while till i found my 66 comet.my comet had a bad engine in it so i put the galaxie 390 in it .i was hooked.the thing is,i have been running these fe engines for 37 years but i have allways used stock iron heads.this is my first set of aftermarket alu heads and im wanting to give them a try.this engine i have now is the best running fe i have owned.its full of goodies from top to bottom but i just thought those cj iron heads and pi intake are holding everything back a bit

Funny thing about questions like this, your responses say what you really want to do. The CJ head/PI intake is a good combo, but the BBM/RPM combo would add some while using less total timing. Your responses tell the truth of the matter...put em on and let 'er rip ;D

Same thing happened to me.  I "found" a bare pair of BBM heads and a '68 S.O. block for el cheapo while my newly completed 427 S.O. was running great.  What to do?  Build a 482 of course!
I'm getting ready to swap then sell the 427...

well,i got my new bbm heads rpm intake, coated headers, and hs rockers on.off went the cj heads,pi intake, rusty headers, and stock rockers.i am amazed at the sound of my new combo.well pleased, but for some reason my engine will turn off for no reason at any time or place.im afraid to go anywhere because of this.sometimes it wont start and sometimes it will fire right up.any ideas or comments on this problem.433,10.7 to 1 bbm heads, msd pro billet dist, box and coil,292 comp cam850 holley, etc. when it dies it dont sputter it dies like someone just turned the key off

Basic rule of thumb---'If it sputters, it's fuel. If it just quits, it's an electric problem'.

Good luck!
