MSD Blaster coil failure
« on: January 16, 2017, 03:11:44 PM »
So. I have done som work to my stock 352 inn my galaxie. That innclude performer 390 intake (Got it sheap, and the engine is stock so did not mind buying the performer rpm), 600 quick fuel v/s, AND msd ready run distrubator without ignition controll box. I bought a MSD Blaster 2 coil along with the dist. But the car was missfiring. Switched back to the stock coil and then it worked perfectly. What the hell. Since the oil filled coils should be mounted vertical, i tought maybe this was the problem. So i bought the high vibration blaster coil that can be mountet inn any position, but it still missfire. put back the stock coil again to be shure, and it works perfectly. So, i am a little confused now. Any advise on this one ?

Just one of those things.

I bought a Mallory coil once and it went bad within 5 miles of driving.

Maybe i have a resistor wiring some place in the circuit. Strange that two new coils will go down on me. If that is the case, i learned the hard way. Ah, searched the forum for msd failure etc and found nothing. Searched for resistor, and got a topic that was just what i am looking for. Pink wire to the ignition switch. Well, guess i have a good coil to sell :)  :o :'(

I misread it....thought you just had one bad coil, I didn't see the other one.  Glad you figured it out though.

I think the coils that your trying to use are suppose to be used with a MSD Box.

Edit: I see now the Blaster 2 can be wired directly to the ready to run 8595 distributor. I attached a link showing a few different wiring configurations.

Did you get the same wiring diagram, Robin?

Yeah, its the same diagram that came with my dist. Now, after some playing with my volt meter today i find out that my electrical choke are stealing 2 volt. Disconect the wiring from the choke, and it fired like a champ with the new coil. So now i am confused again. Why would my electrical choke steal 2 volt ? The + wiring from the choke are conectet to + on the coil.

Should never connect an electrical choke to the coil or any part of the ignition circuit.  Find a switched connection/terminal that is not in the ignition system and use instead.  Just makes too many problems.

Reconectet to the fuse box and now have 12V + on the coil when the choke wire is conectet. The car is still stumbling and making missfire when rev. Shooting inn the exhaust and black smoking is laying on the ground under the left tailpipe. I give upp now and send the car to the junkyard.

???  If it is fine with the old coil but mis-firing with the new one you're going to send the car to the junkyard?  Not sure I understand that.
