buying FE engines
« on: July 21, 2016, 07:59:42 AM »
Seems like a stupid question. But I've been bit a few times so always ask
for more input.

One of my current cars is a 62 Ford wagon, with my 351c in it...
Now I see a local wreaking yard with a 66 Tbird and a 390 or maybe a 428 in it.
Does picking up these engines make any sense
I guess they sell for around $300 complete

If its a 428, that is a really good deal.  If its a rebuildable 390, probably still worth picking up, especially if you want to put it in your '62.

No its not a stupid Idea. Around here( western NY) the FEs have dried up. I run across them now & then, but most of them have been put to pasture. Ten yrs ago you could buy them for a $100 bucks, then the scrape drive from china happened. Saw a lot of good iron crushed. Buy it and don`t look back!

All the little bits and pieces are what makes that worth it.

Brackets, bolts, timing cover, etc etc.

Total cost? Tow to your home, remove engine, tow to the junkyard? This may not be worth the $ unless it's a 428. Then again, maybe you can skip the tow and somehow get just the engine (or two) home.

In my area $300 is the common price for 60's and 70's V-8's . That's with them pulling the engine and dropping it on your truck.  Sadly most FE's have been snagged up.
