I decided to put another cam(bigger, of course!) in the 521 for DW so while I had the engine apart I thought I'd get a new balancer. My Ford Motorsport unit worked ok but it was polished stainless and the degree marks were put in so lightly I couldn't see them very well to time the motor. So I got a Pioneer Performance piece(SFI rated). When I tried to put it on, it went a little ways and then got real hard and seemed to stop moving. I did as I always do, I used the balancer bolt to put it on. In this case an ARP bolt. When I tried to remove the bolt it was equally hard to get out, if not harder...uh-ooh. I finally got it out and the end of the threads were galled up. Great. So, I went to the Big Tool Store and got a 5/8x18 tap for the crank but they didn't have a die for the bolt. Next I measured the balancer and the hole was the right diameter...for about 1/4" then it got 0.005" smaller. I went ahead and put the old one back on and I'll send this one back...with extreme prejustice! smile emoticon:) I ended up having to cut the bad part of the bolt off. Yes I'm aggravated but I am also glad it was at the beginning of the hole rather than the end or I could have screwed up all the threads in the crank trying to get that hard ARP bolt out!
