eBay Finds
« on: June 12, 2016, 11:19:49 PM »
I haven't noticed a thread just for the awesome stuff you sometimes find on eBay. So I'll start with this Thunderbolt (replica?). It looks super clean and at $48k, that doesn't sound too bad. I don't really know the value of Fairlane's and Galaxie's however, I only really pay attention to the value of Mustangs.

Along the lines of that, I found this... Hell of a good looking engine, if you overlook the blunder of an air cleaner.

Many dual-quad Hi-riser engines DID come from the factory with some version of a 'cold air' box over the carbs, but I don't recall ever seeing a 427 DQ engine come from the factory that didn't have the 'air cleaner' shown.

To my knowledge Ford didn't make a standard style air cleaner with the wider high riser carb spacing. All that were factory installed in Thunerbolts or LWG had a ram air "bonnet", or the circle track cars had a batwing cowl induction air cleaner.

All of this doesn't matter, as that is quite the mixture of parts anyways. Side oiler service block, HR heads, SOHC/TP carbs, and a mix of other components. Not really "correct" for anything. Looks more like a mix of parts that Mike had laying around the shop.

I often check on eBay for various cammer related items, you never know what will come up. Well, a NOS 427 SOHC crate engine popped up, never been installed. This engine looks mint, obviously will go for stupid money. If only money was no object for me... I'd buy it and probably turn it into an active display engine. Or build something for show purposes, kind of like the Black Ops vehicle recently on Jay Leno's garage.

I'm not convinced that is NOS. Its a very nice piece, but I can see some reproduction parts and if it was NOS why were the carbs cut up?

I'll bite, what parts can you see that are reproduction, and how can you tell. Also, what do you mean by "carbs cut up"?

The air horns aren't cut off, the carbs are double pumpers. While they are not BU / BT carbs, which are the correct carbs that came on the stock engine, it's possible there is a story behind different carbs being supplied with the engine. I haven't seen anything on it that looks like reproduction parts. The only thing that is incorrect are the carbs, but these engines were sold to be raced. It's possible the dealer that ordered the engine did a change order so that the carbs were what a racer would need.

Those are definitely Ford VS carbs that have had the air horns cut off. The BU/BT carbs were the largest 4160 style carb made in 1967, and the only available carbs on the SOHC 8V setup. Remember it is being advertised as a crate engine, and the crate engines were all built the same. They also appear to have been restored, just like everything else. The valve covers appear to be newer aluminum reproductions, and the air cleaner lid is also a new reproduction and not correct. The fuel rail is also a reproduction. Everything else is very nicely detailed and new looking, so no doubt some NOS parts were used when the engine was being put together.

I had to look harder at the pictures, blowing them up and yes, they do appear to be cut. Good eye.
