converter quit stalling
« on: April 12, 2016, 09:40:42 PM »
i have noticed my stall converter has almost quit stalling.it is a 3500,and it used to stall good and flash good too.but it wont stall much over 2000 now.my question is,i was wondering if when a converter quits stalling properly do you lose power through the gears or does it not effect anything but stalling.

Sounds like the sprag in the convertor is slipping.  Or, your engine is running really bad.

engine is running good, new 433,comp cam,msd,950 holley.its the converter.i run slicks on the street,my regular tires would spin through every gear up to 70 80 mph.i dont know much about converters,my car is a fe,4 speed car.a friend talked me into trying an automatic for a while.im going back to a 4 speed when i tare something up in the auto.setup.is it ok to drive not stalling right and would it lose any power to the wheels?

No and yes. No to it's o.k. to drive as the entire convertor can lock up with a broken sprag and yes, a loss of power supplied to the tires.

Add in: it's probably making metal filings that are circulating through your trans. Convertor failure (almost always) means taking the trans apart and cleaning everything. Or rebuilding if it has some miles on it.

agree to all .... I would quit driving it , pull the pan and look for debris , if its clean then replace the converter , if there is debris in there you might want to overhaul to clean out and then replace converter
