Salvage yard tour

I was walking a salvage yard today, took a bunch of pictures, thought I'd share a couple. First is the cylinder head storage school bus. There were about 2 dozen pairs of FE heads mixed in here, and yes I dug through them all. No High Perf stuff, mostly C8AE-H's and D2TE's, and no 14 bolt heads. Here's the front of the bus, about twice this many in the back half.



And here's the distributor storage Econoline. I also dug through most of these. Found one somewhat rare FE piece.



I took a double take on this vehicle - the ultra rare '65 Comet Ranchero LOL. I checked the VIN, it's really just a Ranchero with a Comet front. Still I thought it looks pretty cool, someone needs to build one of these, you'd turn some heads at the car show. I've seen '70's Cyclone - Ranchero's people have built, but never an early one.

Nice. Too bad the head 'shop' look like they just tossed the heads in! This though represents a time where V-8's were king, engines had gear-driven distributors, many with points.....an era that likely won't ever be repeated.

I could show you pictures like this of flathead stuff. That's how I grew up, with nearly 100 Fords in my back yard. Talk about a great playground! There's only about 35 left now.

Here's a picture I almost forgot - a pickup truck 360 swapped into a '65 T-Bird. Someone wasn't quite thinking this one through as far as future oil filter changes LOL.

That's easy, all you have to do is unbolt the adapter and change the gasket every 3,000mi.

Such a contrast to today's modern recycling yards where parts are generally picked and cataloged almost immediately, then out into the yard for a relatively short time and then the carcass is crushed and shipped to China as scrap metal...

I could walk a good old salvage yard all day, old stuff is just plain cool.  I had to drive to Tyler Texas from Erie PA a couple of weeks back and then turn around and come right back the next day.  The only thing I am sure I missed out on was a chance to walk a salvage yard or two down there.  You just can't find the stuff you need where I live.

A fellow I bought my '70 Mach 1 from had a great idea: hit auto body shops. The older the better and rural ones were the best. Many a shop has a big fenced in area out back where wrecks, cars under restoration, abandoned cars and cars they just kinda' ran across are stored.

You have to 'work' the manager or staff a bit to see what's out back though. Often, the cars are NOT picked over since they are not junkyards. My seller would bring a box or two of donuts as he walked in the door. Talk about flies to honey!

Another trick was hitting closed-down gas stations, body shops, dealerships, et al. This was more work since no one is around but if one saw their dream car out back, a call to the bank's phone number (it's always on a slapped-on paper poster on a front door) will usually lead to the fellow in charge of repo's and the property.

You'll have to give me a tutorial on Pontiac heads since I could have been tripping over Poncho gold and I'd never know lol. Sadly it will probably be a year until I'm back there, but I do intend to go back, lots of interesting stuff. Here's another picture, not Ford related, but I bet people will get a kick out of it.
