1961 Starliner drag car
« on: January 19, 2016, 03:17:37 PM »
I spotted this picture on the Y-Block Guy's Facebook page, too good not to share here. If anyone knows anything about the car or track feel free to fill us in. Hood says 390 so it's FE topical. Door looks like it says "Wilbert & Rufus Auto Upholstery" but I can't make out the address. If I didn't know better I'd say that's 57 Lima Bean ( aka the Drunk Monkey ) on the hill in the background. He's had his '57 a long time, but not that long lol.

A Google search of the drivers name on the rear quarter, Garland Alston, turned up this picture ( isn't the internet wonderful? ). I'm going to just take a wild guess here and say this is an earlier photo with the cars original paint and before the aluminum 5 spoke wheels. Caption in the photo says the track here is Aquasco.

There is a thread on the H.A.M.B. about Aquasco dragstrip, sadly many of the pictures are gone, but I did spot the above color picture of the Starliner there. Also this photo of Aquasco looking from the other direction. In this picture I'm guessing the pits are down the hill to the left, the dragstrip runs off to the right.

Hmm, I see a '55/'56 ragtop and a '58 2dr post...but no '57. That's minus 2 bonus points for this post  ;)

TomP is the track expert. He could probably tell you what track it is just by the color of the dirt. Cool picture though. That Starliner really looks good with that bronze paint and 5 spokes! I love these old pictures.

Here's another picture from the H.A.M.B. thread of a '62 Ford kicking butt on a Scrub at Aquasco.
I can just make out 390 on the front fender.

You are correct, my only excuse for such a mistake is too many days of below zero weather here has given me brain freeze lol.
