Ronnie Sox "Shut Down King" Video - must see!
« on: March 09, 2012, 10:08:42 PM »
In 1966, a group of 4 amateur Drag racers and one expert by the name of Ronnie Sox drag tested Detroit’s hottest new iron. Each driver gets a chance at each car, and the E.T.'s and MPH's are averaged. All 4 cars were equipped with the manufacturers hottest big block and 4 speed transmissions.
The film opens with some awesome footage of the 1966 Winternationals at Pomona.

After years of trying, I finally managed to get this elusive, legendary video up on youtube. it almost 1/2 hour long, so allow time.

Jay, you can wait to watch it untill after Drag Week so we're not late.

Have fun,
Joel

Great video except for the hemi being so fast. Just kidding, I have a friend who I help a lot on his 65 Belvedere race car, 426 hemi, runs 9.7's.
He's looking for low 9's now and will be replacing the 426 with a 580ish all aluminum hemi that he just purchased.
He also has a 67 barracuda with an all aluminum 570 something ci hemi street car. Must be nice.

surprised the 390 hung in as good as it did concidering the factory heads on it, I wonder how many Hemi's were produced that year on that model ??

That was fun!  Thanks for the link.  Sure look like slicks on that Hemi...??? (or at least not street tires)

In '66 they made 3350 cars with street Hemi's - all of them were B bodies: Sattelite, Belvedere, Coronet and Charger.  Seeing this video, and then knowing what was to follow in the next few years, I have no doubt that the Street Hemi was a game changer.

I noticed too that the cars had some non-stock looking tires...

Hmmm. 3350 street Hemis and 60 427 Fairlanes.

The old 390 with GT logs against the 426. Nothing like bring a knife to a gun fight.

well thats more Hemi's than I would have thought were made .... a 427 Fairlane would be a better choice in the shoot out since they did mention top HP option , or totally stock tires would have helped the 390 as it was the only car that didn't benefit from the sticky tires ..... how many 427 Fords were made total for 66 including Galaxy's , Mercurys , full and mid sized ??

Slick Chrysler marketing! If you can't beat them at the track, beat them in a 1/2 hour commercial. And like already said, bring a gun to a knife fight.

I agree with the Hemi being a "game changer" , like Chrysler or not , the Hemi brought out the 427 sohc , tunnel port and then Boss 429 , with out the Hemi the Hi-riser would have been all they ever needed ....

just wish ford wouldn't have been so "asleep at the wheel" , they could have had a base model 66 fairlane 390 with COAE heads , low riser valves and good exhaust manifolds and run with 396's any day , let alone some 454 tunnel port mustangs with the small combustion chamber and a wide ratio trans on all performance vehicles .... they had everything on the shelf and never pulled the trigger ... woulda shoulda coulda
