Shelby closeout sale
« on: November 23, 2015, 07:29:42 PM »
JericoGTX ( Jeff ) wanted to post this for the group. Hard to believe now that there was a time dealers were having trouble selling these things! There's a date on the newspaper in the upper left corner of Sept. 1970, so the new '71 Fords were in the dealer's showrooms and these new Shelbys were 2 model years old already. Dealers were probably panicing lol. I've seen similar ads for dealers trying to unload unsold Plymouth SuperBirds too. Looking back in the history rearview mirror it's easy to see the first musclecar era had come to screeching halt. One comment I'll make, looks like they were down to just unsold G.T. 350 small block cars, us in the FE community can take pride that they didn't have trouble selling the 428 powered G.T. 500's.

A long time ago I was standing in a car hole
and looking at a lime green Shelby.
The engine and box were out and he wanted $1200.
I didn't buy. Probably cause I didn't have the $1200.  ::)
Ah the 70's.
That was muscle car heaven.

Yes, the Shelby's were very expensive for the time.  I returned from Vietnam in July 1971 to my duty station at HIll AFB, Ogden Utah.  I had always wanted a new Shelby, and I told my wife if I ever found one, I would buy it.  I found one at Ogden Ford.   I bought the last new one by date that I can find recorded--17 August 1971.  It stickered for $5709.--.  The salesman said that they had at least 12 deposits on the car, but because of insurance costs no one could afford it.  I still have the car.  Joe-JDC

Funny thing that in My one horse town
Way up in Nortern sweden there have
Been several shelbys in the past
I remember one Guy in the midle of the
70s he had a 67 GT350 Then he traded
IT in for a 70 Shelby convertibel
And the Guy who had the ESSO gas
Station had a 65 GT 350 with one extra
set of tail lights

Only 186 fastbacks in 1970.  I don't remember the number of convertibles.  Joe-JDC

And those were just rebodied '69s that they couldn't sell.
What's easy to forget is that $3000 was still a lot of money back then, and just as gas and cost-of-living was beginning to rise significantly. I'm lucky to have gotten my car and all the NOS parts before muscle cars began their fast rise in prices. I couldn't afford the darn thing today!

Yep, it was lot of money. Gas was 35 cents per gallon and Sunoco 260 was about 39 cents.

 http://www.1970sflashback.com/1970/economy.asp

I've said this before: living near Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge on Chicago's NW side, the sale reps. sold only a handful of Hemi cars due to the option cost of IIRC about $1,100 over the base price of the car.
When the base car was say $3,000, that option price represented more than a 33% increase, too rich for most. Many bought the 440 six-pack instead since the option was 1/2 the price....and in street trim actually faster than any Hemi car.

How did SHELBY's weight w/glass pannels compare to similarly optioned Mustang?
« Reply #11 on: November 27, 2015, 10:17:16 AM »
My high school friend ordered a 1970 R-Code 4spd w/3.50:1 TracLoc Mach 1 PS/PB and AM/FM-tape for $4100 out the door.
SHELBY - Rare indeed but the factory Boss's and Mach1s certainly hurt the Shelby's sales. All I'd like to know is how much weight did the glass front fenders, hood and etc of a SHELBY cut off the weight of a Mustang?.....
My W.A. guess is 100lbs?.............................
