Set up questions - 445 build
« on: October 22, 2015, 11:05:08 AM »
I should be seeing some heads soon, and I have few questions about how to set the engine up. First, I'm building a 445 with BBM heads and a Street Dominator intake, stock distributor, roller rockers from TD, hydraulic roller lifters, a roller cam (280/266 average duration - 230/236 duration @ .050), and a QFT SS 830 carb.
  • I will need to order an adjustable pushrod to measure the length before I order a set. What range of length will I need for the adjustable rod? When I order the pushrods (I was going to get them from Smith Bros), what should I specify?
  • The truck will live at about 3200 feet, any suggestions on how to set up the carb for the initial run? We will take it out for break in and run it with a wide band O2 sensor, but I'd like to get close before we fire it.
  • Suggestions on initial timing (I do plan to take it to a dyno but we need to drive it a little first)?

And any other suggestions you may have for someone doing this for the first time.

You'll be using ball/ball pushrods.  A 5/16" .080" wall pushrod will do just fine.  You'll need a checker that will span from 8-9"...I'm usually somewhere around 8.680" with my stuff and Morel lifters.

I would set initial timing at around 14-16°, give it 18° mechanical lead.
