'63/'64 427 badges
« on: October 06, 2015, 01:39:52 AM »
Just a simple question out of curiosity.

I have 3 different reproduction badges.
The bottom one in both photos are new, and the upper two used ones were acquired from a friend.
Looking at them, they are all different. They even are slightly different is size.

The fronts show slight differences in detail, especially with the thicker "427" in the lower one.
The rear of them reveals the biggest differences.

So which one is more correct to be like the original factory badges?

Dan.

I can't speak to the design of the original badge however when you are looking at stuff like this from the 60's, the emblems look like a half-assed attempt. Poor casting / molding, inconsistent coloring and will also have a worn / patina look due to age. If you're going for an authentic look, the top emblem. If you're going for a real clean, beautiful look, the bottom emblem. Personally, I'd rather go for the pristine, beautiful look over the "battle scarred" look.

Bottom one looks original. I've never seen repops that you could see the 427 from the backside, only originals.

yep, I'll go along with that, originals are stamped & you can see the #s from the back.

Any of those three could be original IMO.  Ford used different suppliers and they could have subtle differences as a result.  You could ask Greg Donahue in Florida (Greg Donahue Collector Car Restorations).  He's been specializing in '63-'64 Galaxie restoration and parts for 40+ years.  As for me, I'd pick the best looking one which is on the bottom.

Plus 1 more for the bottom emblem.  I pulled a set these 427 badges that were on my Galaxie when I bought it, replaced them with 390 badges to better represent my 445.  Did not like the false advertising.

Looks like the one on the top is more original I have to of the bottom ones on my stang bought them from a galaxie place a long time ago he told me they were as close to original as possible but he said they were Golder than the originals I think I can see a Golder tinge on the top one. Tommorrow I will look at my old one on my air cleaner which is original . That being said the gold ones look nice especially on my lime gold paint

After taking a closer look on the computer rather than my phone a agree that the color is a little too gold on the bottom ones, but they are the correct size and shape based on the rear profile. I went and compared several different repops I have against my NOS emblem and none were that dark of a gold.

Ok I have the original one in my hand and by looking at the picture the middle one would be the original one the back is not gold in color and all the details can be seen from the back and it is very light. I don't really know how to do the pictures but the kids at work know how I will try later I work 2-1030. Also next to the 427 on the side decorations see how much squared off the lines are compared to the top one that's how mine is

I have a set of repops and you can not see the #'s from the back. ( if that helps at all)

From reading and looking, I think I can assume that Ford may have had different manufacturers for these emblems, thus different emblems.  :)
Did any of them have some sort of part number or casting number inside the back?
