Dove Rocker Valve Cover Clearance
« on: September 14, 2015, 11:03:48 AM »
Hi Folks, I acquired a set of Dove heavy duty roller rockers for my BBM mr heads. I like T & D but I got these Dove rockers for a deal I couldn't pass up.

Question: Will Dove roller rockers clear my finned aluminum 428CJ OEM valve covers?

I hope I don't need pent roof valve covers.

Thank you.

I can't say for sure about the Doves, I use Harland Sharp and they clear, but I had to remove the inner baffles, and I'd assume the same would apply to the Doves since they're about the same size.

A buddy of mine has those rockers on his engine and I think he is running the Cobra Jet covers with them.

If your shaft sets have the Dove end stands that tie into the head bolts that will be a problem with those valve covers. I think I posted a reply with pictures on either this or the other forum a few months back.

I second thundercat.. there will be some interference with stock type height valve covers and the cj covers you mentioned. Its not much and I know one guy that slightly ground the top outside corner of the stands (hd stands that bolt to head stud/bolt) on each end so he could use the covers. Personally I wouldn't have done that. If I just had to use the cj covers I would have used a spacer/riser instead. They seem to clear any of the tall or pintroof style or fabricated valvecovers though. If its the standard HD end supports that don't bolt to the stud/bolt then it should clear just fine. Of course after removing the baffle as cjshaker said..

I acquired a set of cast aluminum covers at the Columbus swap meet some years ago. They'd had the fins milled off so I don't know what they said 'as-cast'.

In order to have them fit with my HD Dove---with headbolt supports---rockers, I had to press them down lightly to create witness marks inside the covers. I then used a carbide burr in my 'whizzer' to relieve at those points on the ends inside the covers. Altogether took about ten minutes on each cover. Worked just fine thereafter.

When I bought them the baffles were missing. I made new ones from aluminum. There was no interference.

Thanks everyone. I "believe" I do have the HD end stands so I may need to get valve cover spacers or perform some mods. The CJ valve covers fit better in my Mach1 so I want to keep them if possible. I also like that they make people think it's still a 428.  (evil hand ringing laugh)
