Questions for Jay

Jay, which kit did you use to convert your Drag Week Mustang into a Shelby?  Did it fit well without major problems?  Thanks!

Earl, I bought all my parts from Branda (www.cobranda.com).  I had checked around and they were supposed to be better than the parts available from Mustangs Unlimited and some of those other places.  I was told there were two outfits making 69 Shelby fiberglass parts, and one was better than the other.  In particular, the front fenders have minor steel reinforcing in the fiberglass that supposedly is not there on the other brand of fenders.

Fit was HORRIBLE.  Every part required some massaging.  Compared to the fiberglass parts I bought for my Galaxie from Crites, these pieces were really bad.  Especially the trunk end caps and trunk; I had to work those pretty hard to make them look good.  They came out OK in the end, though.

Having made those comments about the fit, the car I started with was far from pristine, since I had to put quarters and front floor pans on it.  Also, the car had a minor hit in the driver's side windshield post.  And, of course, I cut the entire front end off the car except for the frame rails, so I had to make custom mounts for the fender bolts.  What I'm saying is that the pieces may have fit better on a nice starting car, rather than one that was rusty and had a bunch of replacement panels.

Thought of a few more questions.  How much of the tail light panel did you have to cut out to fit the fiberglass piece?   Do you have any photos of that area?   Thanks!

I don't have any photos, but most of the taillight panel had to be cut away.  The Shelby fiberglass taillight piece extends back into the trunk somewhat for the length of the taillights, which of course are long.  The only part of the taillight panel that remains is the center area around the trunk lock cylinder; there is probably a 6" or 8" wide section there. Everything else is gone.
