Does the small thermostat on the CJ intake eliminate it from being used on a 63 Galaxie if the original surge tank is retained (with the large thermostat)?  I have access to a CJ intake but would like to retain the original surge tank.

I'm pretty sure you can use the tank with the CJ intake.
The recess for the stat is in the tank and then seals against the intake.
I like to glue them in the recess before I set it on the intake, they sometimes
slip down out of the recess and cause leakage.

Thanks. That makes sense. I wasn't sure if the bolt spacing was different because of the thermostat diameter being different. I don't have a small diameter thermostat housing available for comparison. If anyone can advise if bolt spacing is the same it would be helpful. I see Jay's book rates this manifold quite high, other than being the heaviest.

The bolt spacing is the same, and the CJ intake is an excellent manifold.  The only think I'm not sure about is if the part of the thermostat that sticks into the intake manifold is small enough on the early thermostats to fit the hole on the CJ intake.  Simplest solution would be to just buy one and check it.  I would think that odds are pretty good it would fit.

Being the pack rat that I am I just happen to have a "takeout" large thermostat....,  the large diameter is just under 2.5" and the part that goes into the manifold is only 1.145". Seems this would easily work, can't believe the manifold opening would be that small.  I just wanted to make sure before I make a 400 mile round trip to pickup the manifold.  Thanks for feedback.

Yes, you'll have plenty of room with the CJ intake.
