MSD 6AL Box
« on: July 19, 2015, 08:54:41 PM »
Hi Y'all, I installed an MSD 6AL box and Pro-Billet dist in my Fairlane SBF about 10 years ago.  The box was mounted under the front seat cause I didn't want it to show in the engine compartment.  I just finished a couple months-long job doing an R+R on the heat/AC plenum and took the seat out of the car.

I started the car up today to check the system, leaks, etc. with the front seat out and noticed a hum coming from the box; it was slightly warm to the touch, too.  Is the hum normal?  I never noticed it before!  Btw the car runs fine.

Thanks, Bruce

Pretty normal for some of the older units to hum from what I've seen. New ones I think are 100% electronic so they don't do that. The heat is normal also as long as it doesn't feel real hot.

Thanks Doug, once I bolt the seat back in I probably won't hear it.  It seems to get adequate ventilation under the seat, and only feels slightly warm to the touch.  FYI I've been very pleased with the MSD Pro-Billet and 6AL combo.  Dead reliable, the engine usually starts immediately and doesn't miss a beat!  Will definitely use it again on the next build.

I had one under the dash in a 69 Camaro 2 years ago, it was already in there but with an EFI conversion the guy wanted to fix the noise while we were at it.

It hummed pretty good, box was new in 2000 or so, ended up moving it under the hood.

FWIW, I hid mine low on the bottom pass side apron in my Mustang, under the battery.  However it's a Accel unit, and a bit smaller than an MSD

Put the seat back in today and couldn't hear it!  Of course that's with these 60+ year old ears  ::)
I'll check the area under the batt if I decide to move it at some point.
Thanks to everyone for the input.
