WTB: 428 CJ or non CJ
« on: July 09, 2015, 12:13:15 AM »
    Hi,

It seems my 68 Colony Park which is a Q code car doesn't actually have a 428. I would like to find a 428. Whether it is a regular 428 or a CJ. A complete engine or short block.

I'm located in North Adams, Massachusetts.

   thanks,
    Mark

Still looking for a 428 collecting dust.  Short block or complete.  Block and crank is good too.

Mark, have you tried DSC Motorsport?  Dscmotorsport.com.  I don't know of their reputation but they claim to have 428 blocks available, as well as intakes and other parts.  Can anyone on the forum recommend them?

Yes, Dennis "Riverracer" the owner of DSC is a good guy and long time seller of good Ford parts. Shipping from California may be a big issue though.

Wow, I remember seeing his website about 13 years ago. forgot about it. I will take a look. Shipping might not be that bad as I have an account for LTL truck shipments.

   thanks,

Shipping is always an issue with these, and with 428's also the issue of, it seems, half the sellers not even realizing they don't really have a 428. But you asked for leads so here you go. I don't know the sellers.

Thanks for the leads Kevin. I recently purchased a would-be 428 from a guy who's deceased brother was a Ford collector. It was a 390. It was also full of rust like it had water in the cylinders for a couple decades. There was nothing good about it. It was $100 for the engine, so I took the gamble. There were a couple sets of 429-460 heads and closed chamber 4v Cleveland heads  I bought for really cheap along with a few other items, So, the 100 wasn't a big loss.
I use a craigslist search called zoomthelist.com. I am surprised neither of these two that you listed had come up for me. If someone is selling one of these out of his garage at home, chances are he is not going to palletize the whole thing and bring it to a commercial address to be picked up by truck freight. But, ya never know until you ask.
I sent an e-mail to DMC about buying a block and crank. He has top oiler 427 blocks listed at the same price as a 428 block. If that is the case, then why make it correct when you can make it better than correct with a 427 block and a 428 crank, or a 4.25" stroker crank? The big wagon could always use some extra cubes.

Talked to Dennis a bit. The 427 idea might have been good about 10 years ago. It seems the best way to go would be a new cast 427 if I wanted to go in the direction of a stroker. But, it seems like a bit much when putting together an engine with a very mild cam, stock heads and log manifolds. Perhaps 428 is just the way to go.

Think your right as a 427 with those heads, mild cam and OEM logs would be kind of a waste compared to a 428 engine IMO.

Three 428 blocks for sale on the other forum, it might be too late already.

At 1990's pricing, I guess they would sell fast.

There is a propane fed 428 on a generator about 3 hours from me. The price seems reasonable for the entire unit. The 428 is supposedly low hours. Hopefully it didn't have plain water in the cooling system. Or, have been sitting outside where it got damaged. A few months ago I bought a 460 that had powered a generator, it was very clean inside and out. It had less than 1100 hours on it. In fact, the bores were so nice that I felt bad about boring it. Since I had already bought a stroker kit with .030 over pistons and didn't want to spend another 700-800 on standard bore pistons, I ended up buying another D9TE block.

Back in probably the late eighties I brokered a deal for a couple friends of mine to swap a 4 bolt main 351 4V Cleveland for a propane 428 that came from a school bus. That 428 was also a very nice, very clean motor and my friend ended up building it with some 428 CJ heads I sold him. I would certainly check that generator motor you found. And just as an aside, One of the stores I worked at a few years back had a 460 powered natural gas generator. It was a closed cooling system with antifreeze.
