Calvert split monos on street
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:31:06 AM »
Anyone run the Calvert split mono leafs on the street? Any downside, quirks, things you need to accept to run them?

Considering a set on my Mustang for some upcoming play time along with Caltracs, but the car is 100% street now and will likely stay above 90% street.

I am looking for anything that could annoy me, this car is VERY street, not mostly street LOL  I like the idea of weight loss and saw how well the combo hooks compared to by under ride Shelby bars and stock springs (which don't hop, but lack of weight transfer sure burns the tires LOL)

Thanks

I have the complete Calvert suspension set up on my 67 mustang and really like it. The only thing I noticed on the street was the rear seams "bouncy" when on a rough road. I'm not sure if its the mono-leaf, the drag shocks, or the tires with 15 psi. Maybe its a combination. All in all it's a great set up and they will be going on my fairlane soon.

X2
Works great. It's REALLY heavy duty. So NOT soft and cushy.
At least my Fairlane setup is.
I drove around the Cabot Trail with the springs and bars, using a different shock than
Calvert sells thought. We had 3 full size adults and the trunk full.
That is some serious climbing and turning at the same time.
The bars do hang down though so keep that in mind when out and a bout.
I consider the upgrade mandatory for full sport mode. ::)

Hey Howie
Did you go +1, stock or -1 on the spring eyes and can I see a pic of your ride height?
Hope you don't mind Ross.

If Ross doesn't mind. This was stock ride height with the car carrying a couple of full size. I weight 14.5 stone give or take
and I'm not allowed to know how much she weighs and the trunk full for a day of car show and BBQ.
I'm going to go +1 for more tire clearance though.
I'm going to jam some bigger tires in there. :P

I sure don't mind, I need to make all the same decisions, buy or not, height or not. The more info the better!

I have those springs both on my Mach 1 and my Galaxie.  I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them for a mostly street vehicle, they are perfectly fine on the street IMO.  When you add those springs and the Cal-Tracs, it seems as if the rear roll stiffness of the car increases significantly, kind of like if you put a big rear sway bar on the car.  My Mach 1 handled better with the Cal-Trac setup than it did with the stock leaf spring arrangement.

One other thing - Calvert's service is top notch.  The offer the rear half of the leaf in stock ride height, +1", or -1".  When I got mine (+1") the car sat way too high.  I called Travis at Calvert and he said send them back and he'd swap them for the the standard ride height set.  He actually sent them before I got the +1" rear leafs off the car!  I was only down for a day waiting for the replacement leaf.  They are really, really good folks to deal with.

+1 on them being great to deal with. Travis was very accommodating and extremely helpful.

Ross, I like mine, but if you don't want to lose any ride quality, you may want to try getting a ride in a car that has them. They will be somewhat stiffer, and depending on your tastes, they may be a bit much for what you want. I'd be happy to give you a ride in my car if you pass through Ohio  :)

Thanks guys!

I am not worried about stiffer, I was under the impression they may be too soft to allow weight transfer.  So far everything sounds like it's a good move for mine.

Doug - I don't get to Ohio much, but if I come that way I may take you up on it!

Anyone running rear leaf sliders with the Calvert set up?
I already have Caltracs on my 66 Fairlane and wanting to try the Calvert springs and shocks.
Car was originally built with rear leaf sliders and would like to not have to torch them off.
I know they discuss this on their web site but wanting to find out first hand from someone.
Great topic guys and good info.

I couldn't say on the sliders Gary, but this is the setup on my 66. It has Calvert split-monos (1" drop), Caltracs, KYB gas adjust shocks, replacement shackles w/polyurethane bushings, new rubber spring insulators with insulator pads, and pinion wedge shims sandwiched in between. Ride is excellent and plants very well. Still waiting to get to the track to test all the new suspension out. The front has been gone through as well.
