'74 F-350 Built in '90 to '94
« on: November 23, 2014, 12:02:52 PM »
First I just want to say I am amazed at the build quality of some of your projects on here. The attention to detail, fixing everything back to original or better, the knowledge and ability of you guys are second to none.

My build is a little backwards since it was done years ago. It is also a little different due to the size of the truck and the transplant of the FE to a Cummins. The build quality is not nearly as complete as what I see here but none the less a pretty good rig.

I am computer challenged so bare with me a bit as I try to size pic's to fit and such. A little history. I bought the truck (360/4spd/D70/4.10) in 1977 used from a Ford dealer in Miles City, Montana (well used, ex oil field rig) to help move down here to Arizona. It needed to tow an 8x35 park model trailer, so the first thing I did was cut the frame off at the rear of the rear spring shackles for more hitch support and installed a wood/metal 8x10 bed from Omaha Standard (metro model).

Please feel free to ask questions. More to come. Dang I can't seem to size my pic's right, any ideas?

Chapter 2...........With some guys here helping me I think I can post pic's now from PB.

First pic is my second 428 in this truck. I used it hard in the Log Woods. At this time it still had the NP435 with the 3spd Spicer Aux, running 4.56 gears. I used to think it pulled good even if it only got 3 mpg towing heavy.

Second pic is my first attempt at mud bogging, what a dumbbell move, lol. I had never even seen a mud bog before. When they pulled me out backwards, both mufflers dug in the mud and broke both pipes off at the headers and shoved the ends up through the wood floor of the flat bed. I drove home with open headers...

Third chapter.....gonna try this again. First pic is a Log Skidder hauled from Seattle, Washington to here. This was with the 428, about 32k gross, it did okay but sucked the gas like no tomorrow!

Second pic is a Log Skidder hauled from Redding, California to here, same weight 32k. This was with the Cummins, 5spd Clark 280VO, 3spd Aux and 4.10 gears. Fuel mileage went up to 7 v/s 3 and way more power. Plus I had an Exhaust Brake now, so down hill was a breeze.

Fourth chapter.....just some random shots of my truck working. A load of scrap metal and high lift fork lift, note the white Ford pickup in the back, it was attached to the trailer via tow bar. I hauled this load out of Amarillo, TX, no problems in Texas or New Mexico, just had to buy fuel permits, however when I hit the Port of Entry at Sanders, AZ my home state, I almost went to jail, lol. I was over my GVW registration, in no uncertain terms I was told not to do that again!

Note the blue '67 ford XL in the background, the donor for one of my 428's and the 428 badge on the fender ;D

Chapter 5, the start of the body and paint work, also some drive train changes. The only part of the truck that is still oem, is the cab, frame and rear suspension, every thing else is a transplant. Note the front axle with the leaf springs, this is out of a '76 Dodge class A motorhome, gone is the twin I beam.

Chapter 5, page 3 more of the same. Note the size of the rear axle, it is a Dana 70 HD 10,000 lbs cap. this is the GM version because they used bigger brakes than the Ford for this era. Ford used 12"x3" GM used 13"x3.5"

Chapter 6, the shinny stuff :) Note the air ride seats, if you look close on one of the previous pic's of the engine you can see the gear driven air compressor, 8.5 cfm Holset, air cooled.  [imghttp://i1381.photobucket.com/albums/ah211/NIsaacs1/scan0022_zps8b341f5b.jpg?1416879572150&1416879573012]http://[/img]

Chapter 6, page 6, more of the same.

The load of cattle guards were hauled to Prineville, Oregon, about 28k total, then I pick up 6 ton of hardwood barbeque pellets from Portland and hauled them back. Note the two spares, one for the Dodge front axle, stud centric 17.5's and the rear, GM hub centric 16's. You can't see it but there is a door, about a foot in front of the rear axle center line for the goose neck ball access and one near the toolbox for the battery (4D) access.

Cool stuff.  I was a Ford Truck guy a lot longer than a Ford car guy, so I'm happy to have ya here!
The old trucks don't get enough attention, and the few Ford truck forums and full of mostly retarded high school kids that know everything in their 1 year of owning a vehicle.

So is this the truck you are currently using in truck pulls?

Thanks for re-sizing my pic's and the truck welcome. It was a fun build and still makes me smile when I drive it. Back in the day when the Fords and Chevy diesels were naturally aspirated, I pretty much commanded the hammer lane on the freeways but with the big power they all have now, I stay in the slow lane now :) Here is a pic of my sled puller.
