The Road to Drag Week 2014 - June 8
« on: June 09, 2014, 12:11:51 AM »
It's been another week of slow going on this project, and I am now officially behind schedule (imagine that LOL!).  Seems like all I've been doing for the last 3 weeks is fabrication work.  After pulling out the sheet metal intake last week I realized I needed to make some changes, and this included some welding and grinding on the intake, plus programming and machining a 1/2" delrin spacer.  And then some kind of a stomach bug hit me today and I hardly got anything done.  But on Saturday night before I got sick I did finish up the work on the intake manifold and the spacer, and got it mounted on the engine.  I also stuck on the headers to help me figure out where all the dry sump lines would have to run, and installed the fuel rails and injectors so I had an idea what I would have to do about the fuel system.  I just got off the Summit Racing site, ordering all the plumbing that I need to finish this up.  Basically, with the intake manifold finished, I'm down to making up a few new brackets and some lines, plus the throttle linkage, and then this engine can finally go on the dyno.  Next weekend I'll have it on the dyno for sure, although probably not running because I still need to do all the wiring work.  But I'm getting closer.  Here's a picture of the engine as it sits tonight on the stand:

I should have more details to share next weekend...

Sorry to hear about the bug, but the engine is looking good. What has changed that you need so much wiring to do? Didn't you run the EFI on there before?

And if you need help with the wiring I'd be glad to help. Unfortunately I'll be out of town that day....whatever day it is :)

Last time I ran this engine I was using the ems-pro EFI system.  I was never able to get that working right, for whatever reason; it always gave me problems with the crank sensor signal.  This time I'm going to the MS3X Megasquirt EFI box, which I had very good luck with on the high riser engine in my Mach 1.  All the wires go to the same hardware with the two systems, but the connector into the EFI box is different, and in fact there are two connectors on the MS3X, not just one.  In addition, I'm running a cam sensor and full sequential EFI with this setup, which means each injector has to be wired individually rather than having each bank of four wired in parallel, like they were on the ems-pro.  So, there are some significant wiring differences.

Too bad you won't be around to give me a hand, Doug, but I know who to contact if I need help with the fuel tank sender  ;D

Great lookin' mill there, Jay ;D.  A study in header art too, sure looks like it's gonna breath just fine.  Good thing there aren't any shock towers to get in the way.

Jay, in your posts opening picture above, what are those "bands" a few inches downstream of the header flange on the primary tubes?......... Does not look like they are used elsewhere in your header construction.

Way out in the outfield check the size of the individual intake runners on these 1350HP Merc Offshore Powerboat motors

Slip fit tubes with connectors. You can see the connectors on the tubes. A very smart choice and common on drag headers.

That's correct.  The headers wrap around the original 69 Mustang frame rails, so they have to be kind of a piece-together construction.

What size are those oil pump fittings? The one is almost header tube diameter!

That is a #20 fitting; it carries all the scavenge gasses and oil from five stages back up to the dry sump tank.  They are huge fittings, all right...
